Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Develop, implement, and refine comprehensive transportation strategies to optimize for cost, service level, and transit time across all modes, including LTL, FTL, ocean, air, and parcel.
- Lead the negotiation of rates, terms, and contracts with a diverse portfolio of freight carriers and 3PL providers to secure favorable agreements and build strong, collaborative partnerships.
- Provide strategic oversight and daily management of all inbound and outbound freight operations, ensuring the seamless and timely flow of materials and finished goods.
- Manage and mentor a team of transportation specialists, coordinators, and analysts, setting clear performance expectations and fostering a culture of continuous improvement and professional development.
- Ensure unwavering compliance with all Department of Transportation (DOT), Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA), and other relevant local, state, and federal regulations.
- Champion the effective use of the Transportation Management System (TMS) to plan, execute, tender, and track shipments, as well as to identify opportunities for load consolidation and route optimization.
- Establish, monitor, and report on key performance indicators (KPIs) such as on-time delivery, cost-per-shipment, carrier performance, freight cost as a percentage of sales, and accessorial spend.
- Conduct regular business reviews (QBRs) with key carriers to evaluate performance against service level agreements (SLAs) and collaboratively develop corrective action plans.
- Oversee the freight audit and payment process, ensuring the accuracy of carrier invoices, disputing discrepancies, and identifying root causes to prevent future billing errors.
- Develop and manage the annual transportation department budget, providing detailed variance analysis, monthly forecasting, and strategic recommendations to senior leadership.
- Serve as the primary point of contact for resolving escalated transportation issues, including service failures, shipment damages, and complex delivery challenges.
- Analyze freight data and market trends to identify cost-saving opportunities, network inefficiencies, and potential risks, translating insights into actionable business recommendations.
- Lead the selection and onboarding process for new carriers, ensuring they meet company standards for safety, service, and financial stability.
- Collaborate closely with cross-functional teams, including Warehousing, Procurement, Customer Service, and Sales, to align transportation activities with broader business objectives.
- Manage claims processes for freight loss or damage, working with carriers and insurance providers to ensure timely resolution and recovery.
- If applicable, direct the management of a private or dedicated fleet, including vehicle maintenance programs, driver safety, routing, and compliance with HOS regulations.
- Drive continuous improvement initiatives within the transportation function, leveraging Lean principles or Six Sigma methodologies to enhance processes and reduce waste.
- Evaluate and recommend new technologies, software, and tools that can improve visibility, efficiency, and data-driven decision-making within the logistics network.
- Prepare and present regular reports and strategic updates on transportation performance and initiatives to the executive management team.
- Develop and maintain standard operating procedures (SOPs) for all key transportation processes to ensure consistency and operational excellence.
