Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Safely and efficiently transport patients via wheelchair, stretcher, or hospital bed to and from various clinical and non-clinical departments, including radiology, physical therapy, surgical suites, and patient rooms.
- Consistently verify patient identity using at least two patient identifiers (e.g., name and date of birth) before initiating any transport to ensure patient safety and accuracy.
- Assist clinical staff, such as nurses and technicians, with the safe transfer of patients between beds, stretchers, and chairs using proper body mechanics and lifting techniques.
- Maintain constant, clear communication with the central dispatch office, nursing stations, and receiving departments via two-way radio, pager, or mobile device to provide updates on transport status and receive new assignments.
- Ensure all transport equipment, including wheelchairs and stretchers, is cleaned, sanitized, and in good working order before and after each use, adhering to strict infection control policies.
- Promptly report any equipment malfunctions, safety hazards, or patient incidents to the appropriate supervisor or department for immediate resolution.
- Respond to transport requests in a timely and prioritized manner, effectively managing workflow to minimize patient wait times and support hospital-wide efficiency.
- Provide comfort, support, and reassurance to patients and their families during transport, maintaining a professional, courteous, and empathetic demeanor at all times.
- Observe patients during transport for any signs of distress or changes in condition and immediately alert the nearest clinical staff member if any concerns arise.
- Handle and manage medical equipment attached to the patient during transport, such as IV poles, oxygen tanks, and cardiac monitors, ensuring they are handled correctly and remain functional.
- Accurately document all transport activities, including patient information, times, and locations, in the hospital's electronic health record (EHR) or a designated manual log system.
- Adhere strictly to all hospital policies and procedures, including those related to patient confidentiality (HIPAA), infection control, and safety protocols.
- Efficiently navigate the hospital campus, utilizing knowledge of floor layouts, department locations, and approved routes to ensure the quickest and safest journey.
- Assist with the patient discharge process by transporting patients and their belongings to the designated hospital exit or vehicle.
- Transport deceased patients to the morgue with the utmost respect, dignity, and adherence to established protocols.
- Deliver lab specimens, medical records, medications, and other critical supplies between departments as requested, ensuring chain of custody and timely delivery.
- Ensure patient safety and comfort by properly applying safety belts, side rails, and other restraints as required by patient condition and hospital policy.
- Proactively communicate with patients, providing clear, simple instructions and explanations regarding the transport process to alleviate anxiety.
