Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

Safely operate a heavy-duty truck, such as a front-loader, side-loader, or rear-loader, along a designated route to collect solid waste and/or recyclable materials.
Perform comprehensive pre-trip and post-trip vehicle inspections in accordance with Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations, checking tires, lights, brakes, hydraulics, and fluid levels.
Document and report any mechanical issues, safety defects, or necessary repairs to the maintenance team or supervisor to ensure vehicle readiness and safety.
Maneuver the collection vehicle through congested urban streets, narrow alleyways, and tight residential areas while strictly adhering to all traffic laws and safety protocols.
Operate hydraulic levers, controls, and packer blades to lift, empty, and compact waste from residential carts, commercial dumpsters, and other containers.
Exit the vehicle to manually collect waste bags, bulk items, yard waste, or overflowing materials that cannot be handled mechanically.
Transport collected materials to designated post-collection facilities, such as transfer stations, material recovery facilities (MRFs), or landfills, and follow procedures for unloading.
Navigate the assigned route efficiently using route sheets, maps, or onboard GPS technology to ensure all scheduled stops are serviced in a timely manner.
Maintain constant awareness of surroundings, including pedestrians, cyclists, other vehicles, and overhead obstacles, to prevent accidents and injuries.
Ensure all waste is securely contained within the truck body during transport to prevent spillage and litter on public roadways.
Adhere rigorously to all company policies as well as federal, state, and local regulations regarding safety, environmental compliance, and waste handling.
Provide courteous and professional customer service when interacting with residents and business owners, addressing questions or concerns calmly and effectively.
Complete all required daily paperwork, including route logs, vehicle inspection reports (DVIR), and service records, with accuracy and legibility.
Work effectively outdoors in a variety of challenging weather conditions, including extreme heat, cold, rain, sleet, and snow.
Identify and tag non-compliant containers or improper waste set-outs with appropriate notices for the customer.
Return empty waste and recycling containers to their proper location, ensuring they do not block driveways, sidewalks, or traffic.
Participate actively in mandatory safety meetings, training sessions, and driver development programs to maintain and enhance skills and safety awareness.
Communicate clearly and promptly with dispatchers and supervisors regarding route progress, delays, blocked streets, or any incidents that may occur.
Assist other drivers or helpers on different routes as directed to ensure the completion of all daily collection services.
Perform routine cleaning of the truck cab and body to maintain a professional appearance and a safe, sanitary working environment.

Secondary Functions

Assist with general clean-up duties at the company yard, transfer station, or maintenance shop.
Participate in community clean-up events or public education initiatives on proper waste disposal and recycling.
Provide support in training new employees, including helpers and drivers, on route specifics and safety procedures.
Report any observed illegal dumping or significant public health hazards to the appropriate supervisor or municipal authority.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

Valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL), typically Class A or B with air brake endorsement.
Proven ability to safely operate heavy-duty trucks and equipment.
In-depth knowledge of DOT regulations and commercial driving laws.
Physical strength and stamina to repeatedly lift and move objects weighing up to 75 pounds.

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

Experience Requirements
