Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Provide immediate, definitive surgical care to critically injured patients, from initial resuscitation in the emergency department through complex operative procedures and post-operative management.
  • Lead the multidisciplinary trauma team during trauma activations, directing patient care and ensuring seamless coordination between emergency medicine, surgery, anesthesia, and nursing staff.
  • Perform a wide range of emergent and complex surgical procedures, including damage control laparotomy, thoracotomy, vascular repair, and management of solid organ injuries.
  • Manage the full spectrum of patient care in the Surgical Intensive Care Unit (SICU), including ventilator management, hemodynamic monitoring, and treatment of sepsis and multi-organ failure.
  • Participate actively in a rotating call schedule, providing 24/7 coverage for trauma, acute care surgery, and surgical critical care services.
  • Conduct daily comprehensive rounds on all admitted trauma and acute care surgery patients, meticulously developing and adjusting treatment plans in collaboration with the care team.
  • Evaluate and manage urgent and emergent general surgery consultations, providing timely and expert surgical solutions for conditions like appendicitis, bowel obstruction, and cholecystitis.
  • Ensure meticulous and timely completion of all clinical documentation, including operative reports, daily progress notes, and discharge summaries within the electronic health record (EHR) system.
  • Communicate with empathy and clarity to patients and their families, explaining complex medical conditions, treatment options, prognoses, and goals of care.
  • Collaborate effectively with consulting specialists, advanced practice providers, case managers, and rehabilitation therapists to ensure holistic and coordinated patient care.
  • Drive performance improvement and patient safety (PIPS) initiatives by actively participating in trauma case reviews, peer reviews, and morbidity and mortality (M&M) conferences.
  • Actively engage in the education, mentorship, and clinical supervision of general surgery residents, fellows, medical students, and physician assistants.
  • Uphold and ensure continuous compliance with all standards and requirements for American College of Surgeons (ACS) Trauma Center verification.
  • Assume a leadership role in developing, implementing, and refining clinical protocols and evidence-based guidelines to standardize and elevate the quality of trauma care.
  • Contribute to the academic mission of the institution through participation in clinical research, scholarly publications, and presentations at regional and national conferences.
  • Perform elective general surgery cases as part of a well-rounded practice, maintaining broad surgical skills.
  • Direct and oversee the management of the trauma patient from resuscitation through their inpatient stay, including planning for rehabilitation and discharge.
  • Demonstrate expertise in the operative management of complex injuries to the neck, chest, abdomen, and extremities.

Secondary Functions

  • Actively participate in community outreach and injury prevention programs, representing the trauma center and promoting public health and safety initiatives.
  • Provide clinical leadership and subject matter expertise for institutional disaster preparedness and mass casualty incident response planning and drills.
  • Engage in ongoing professional development and continuing medical education to maintain cutting-edge knowledge and skills in trauma surgery and critical care.
  • Contribute to the administrative functions of the trauma program, including participation in strategic planning, budget review, and committee meetings.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Board Certification or Board Eligibility in General Surgery by the American Board of Surgery.
  • Board Certification or Board Eligibility in Surgical Critical Care.
  • Current, unrestricted state medical license and DEA registration.
  • Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) certification is required; instructor status is highly preferred.
  • Proven proficiency in a broad range of open, laparoscopic, and robotic surgical procedures.
  • Expertise in the comprehensive management of complex poly-trauma patients and surgical critical care.
  • Experience with modern electronic health record (EHR) systems such as Epic or Cerner.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) from an accredited medical school.
  • Successful completion of an accredited General Surgery residency program.

Preferred Education:

  • Successful completion of an ACGME-accredited fellowship in Surgical Critical Care or Acute Care Surgery.

Typical Experience Range:

  • A track record of academic contributions, including teaching, research, or publications.
