- Execute precision pruning in accordance with ANSI A300 standards, including crown cleaning, thinning, raising, and reduction, to improve tree health, structure, and aesthetics.
- Perform complex and technical tree removals, methodically dismantling trees in sections, especially in tight quarters or near structures, power lines, and other obstacles.
- Skillfully operate a variety of arboricultural equipment, including chainsaws of all sizes, wood chippers, stump grinders, and aerial lifts, with a paramount focus on safety.
- Conduct thorough tree risk assessments from the ground and aloft, identifying structural defects, decay, disease, and potential hazards to inform management decisions.
- Install structural support systems, such as dynamic and static cables and bracing rods, to provide supplemental support to weakened limbs or co-dominant stems.
- Utilize sophisticated rigging techniques to control, lift, and lower limbs and wood sections safely and efficiently, minimizing impact on the property and landscape below.
- Maintain constant situational awareness, monitoring changing weather conditions, site-specific hazards (like electrical wires), and the actions of the entire crew.
- Diagnose common pest and disease issues found in the tree canopy and communicate findings to the Crew Leader or a Plant Health Care specialist for treatment recommendations.
- Respond effectively during emergency and storm-damage situations, which often involves working long hours in adverse conditions to clear fallen trees and hazardous limbs.
- Work in close coordination with the ground crew, using a clear system of communication (verbal and hand signals) to ensure a safe and efficient workflow.
- Adhere rigorously to all industry safety standards, including ANSI Z133, and company-specific safety protocols at all times.
- Perform aerial rescue drills and maintain the skills necessary to rescue an injured colleague from a tree.
- Prune trees to provide necessary clearance for utility lines, buildings, walkways, and roads, balancing client needs with the tree's health.
- Select and use appropriate cutting techniques to make clean, proper cuts that facilitate wound closure and minimize the risk of decay.
Secondary Functions
- Actively mentor and train junior climbers and ground crew members, passing on knowledge of safe work practices, climbing techniques, and equipment use.
