Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Manage a demanding caseload independently from intake and initial investigation through discovery, trial, and post-trial proceedings.
- Develop and execute comprehensive litigation and trial strategies tailored to the unique facts and legal issues of each case.
- Conduct and defend depositions of fact witnesses, clients, and expert witnesses, demonstrating mastery of questioning techniques.
- Draft, file, and argue a wide range of complex legal motions, including motions to dismiss, motions for summary judgment, and motions in limine.
- Serve as first or second chair in jury trials, bench trials, and arbitrations, handling all aspects of the proceeding from voir dire to closing arguments.
- Perform in-depth legal research using Westlaw/LexisNexis to analyze intricate legal issues and draft persuasive briefs, memoranda, and appellate filings.
- Prepare clients and witnesses for testimony, ensuring they are confident and ready for deposition and cross-examination.
- Lead settlement negotiations and represent clients in mediations and arbitrations to achieve favorable, cost-effective resolutions.
- Conduct thorough fact investigation, including interviewing witnesses, gathering documentary evidence, and directing investigative efforts.
- Analyze and evaluate potential claims and defenses to provide clients with early case assessments, risk analysis, and strategic counsel.
- Direct and manage all phases of electronic and paper discovery, including document review, drafting discovery requests, and responding to opposing counsel's inquiries.
- Argue motions and present evidence effectively in state and federal court hearings before judges and magistrates.
- Identify, retain, and collaborate with leading expert witnesses to build and support case theories.
- Craft compelling opening statements and closing arguments that distill complex information into a persuasive narrative for a judge or jury.
- Skillfully examine and cross-examine lay and expert witnesses during trial to elicit favorable testimony and discredit opposing arguments.
- Maintain constant and clear communication with clients, providing regular status updates, strategic advice, and managing expectations.
- Draft and respond to all initial pleadings, including complaints, answers, and counterclaims, with precision and strategic foresight.
- Utilize case management software and legal technology to efficiently manage deadlines, documents, and case-related information.
- Ensure strict compliance with all court deadlines, procedural rules, and ethical obligations.
- Evaluate liability and damages to provide clients with accurate case valuation and settlement recommendations.
Secondary Functions

Typical Experience Range: 3-15+ years of direct litigation experience in a law firm or government setting.
Preferred:
- Significant first-chair trial experience in state or federal court is highly desirable.
