Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Skillfully operate a wide range of hand tools, including precision knives, files, scrapers, and deburring tools, to meticulously remove flash, parting lines, and excess material from plastic, metal, or composite parts.
  • Employ various power tools, such as pneumatic grinders, orbital sanders, and routers, to achieve specified surface finishes and contours on manufactured components.
  • Conduct thorough visual inspections of each part post-trimming to identify and segregate components with defects like cracks, voids, short shots, or surface blemishes.
  • Read and interpret complex engineering blueprints, technical drawings, and work instructions to understand the precise trimming requirements and dimensional tolerances for each job.
  • Utilize precision measuring instruments, including digital calipers, micrometers, and go/no-go gauges, to verify that finished parts meet all critical dimensional specifications.
  • Maintain a consistent and high level of output to meet daily and weekly production targets without compromising safety or quality standards.
  • Expertly identify and sort parts by material type and product number, ensuring proper handling and routing to the next stage of the production process.
  • Perform routine trimming fixture setups and adjustments to accommodate different part runs, ensuring optimal positioning for efficient and accurate finishing.
  • Systematically document production and quality data, accurately completing daily logs, part count sheets, and non-conformance reports for traceability.
  • Follow all established company safety protocols and procedures, including the proper use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) at all times.
  • Grind, sand, clean, or polish objects or parts to correct defects or to prepare surfaces for further finishing, using hand tools and power tools.
  • Trim, scrape, or deburr objects or parts using portable tools to ensure they conform to the highest quality standards.
  • Operate and control trimming machines and related equipment to perform cutting and finishing functions according to operational guidelines.
  • Monitor the trimming process closely to detect any machine malfunctions or product inconsistencies, reporting issues to supervisors promptly.
  • Sharpen or replace worn-out tool bits and cutting edges to maintain the precision and effectiveness of trimming equipment.
  • Handle and transport raw materials and finished parts within the manufacturing facility, often involving lifting and moving containers up to 50 lbs.
  • Work collaboratively with the quality assurance team to understand defect trends and participate in root cause analysis activities.
  • Weigh or count finished articles to determine if production orders are complete and properly documented.
  • Set up, operate, or tend machines that cut, shave, or trim materials such as rubber, plastic, or composite materials.
  • Clean and perform basic preventative maintenance on tools and equipment to ensure they remain in good working order and to minimize downtime.

  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe workstation by adhering to 5S principles and company-wide housekeeping standards.
  • Assist in the training and mentoring of new team members on trimming techniques, safety procedures, and quality expectations.
  • Provide constructive feedback to engineering and molding departments regarding part design or process issues that affect trimming efficiency and quality.
  • Participate actively in continuous improvement initiatives and kaizen events aimed at enhancing productivity, safety, and product quality.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Proficiency in using a variety of hand-held finishing tools, such as deburring knives, files, and scrapers.
  • Experience operating powered finishing equipment, including pneumatic grinders, sanders, and routers.
  • Ability to read and accurately interpret technical documents, including engineering blueprints, work orders, and quality control plans.
  • Skilled in the use of precision measurement tools like calipers, micrometers, and various gauges to verify part dimensions.
  • Strong understanding of manufacturing safety procedures, including Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) and proper PPE usage.
  • Basic mechanical aptitude for performing minor tool adjustments and maintenance.
  • Knowledge of material properties (e.g., plastics, die-cast metals, composites) and their characteristics during finishing processes.
  • Competence in completing production paperwork and logs with a high degree of accuracy.
  • Experience operating trimming presses or other automated finishing machinery.
  • Ability to visually inspect parts under magnification to identify minute flaws and imperfections.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent.

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range:

  • 1-3 years of hands-on experience in a manufacturing environment, ideally in a role involving trimming, deburring, finishing, or assembly.

Preferred:

  • 3+ years of direct experience trimming or finishing parts in a high-volume plastic injection molding, die-casting, or composites manufacturing setting.
