Primary Functions

A successful Trolley Driver is responsible for a wide range of duties that ensure a safe, efficient, and enjoyable experience for all passengers. These core functions include:

  • Operate a multi-passenger trolley vehicle in a safe, lawful, and professional manner, adhering strictly to all traffic laws, DOT regulations, and company safety protocols.
  • Conduct thorough pre-trip and post-trip vehicle inspections, meticulously checking tires, brakes, fluid levels, lights, safety equipment, and accessibility features to ensure roadworthiness.
  • Maintain a punctual and consistent schedule, arriving at designated stops on time and managing route timing effectively to provide a reliable service.
  • Provide clear, engaging, and often scripted narration or commentary about points of interest, historical facts, and local anecdotes along the tour route.
  • Master and navigate complex urban, scenic, or campus routes, including adapting to detours, traffic congestion, and unexpected road closures with professionalism.
  • Ensure the safety and well-being of all passengers during boarding, transit, and alighting, paying special attention to children, the elderly, and individuals with disabilities.
  • Assist passengers with boarding and disembarking, which includes the proper operation of lifts or ramps for wheelchairs and securely fastening mobility devices as required by ADA regulations.
  • Effectively manage passenger conduct to maintain a safe and pleasant atmosphere on board, addressing any disruptive behavior professionally and decisively.
  • Collect fares, tickets, or passes using on-board systems, handle cash transactions accurately, and remain accountable for a daily cash bank and sales records.
  • Communicate clearly and effectively with the dispatch office via two-way radio or other devices, reporting schedule deviations, incidents, or mechanical issues in real-time.
  • Respond calmly and efficiently to on-road emergencies, accidents, or passenger medical issues, following established emergency procedures and contacting the appropriate authorities.
  • Maintain a comprehensive and accurate log of mileage, passenger counts, and hours of service in compliance with Department of Transportation (DOT) and company regulations.
  • Answer passenger questions courteously and accurately, serving as a knowledgeable local resource and a positive representative of the service.
  • Perform basic interior and exterior cleaning of the trolley, ensuring the vehicle remains presentable, sanitary, and free of debris throughout the shift.
  • Monitor vehicle performance during operation and immediately report any mechanical defects, strange noises, or performance issues to the maintenance department.
  • Actively participate in mandatory safety meetings, ongoing driver training sessions, and periodic performance reviews to maintain and enhance professional skills.
  • Adhere to all uniform and personal appearance standards, presenting a professional, clean, and approachable image to the public at all times.
  • Promote and upsell company tours, tickets, and merchandise when appropriate, contributing to the overall business objectives.
  • Complete all required daily paperwork and reports with a high degree of accuracy and submit them in a timely manner at the end of each shift.
  • Adapt to varying shifts and a flexible schedule, including early mornings, late nights, weekends, and holidays, as operational needs dictate.
  • Proactively monitor weather and traffic conditions through available resources to make informed decisions that prioritize passenger safety and schedule integrity.

Secondary Functions

  • Assist the maintenance team with basic vehicle servicing tasks or by transporting vehicles to and from repair facilities.
  • Contribute to the development and refinement of tour scripts and route information by providing feedback and suggestions from on-the-ground experience.
  • Participate in charter services and special events, which may require different routes, customized narration, and unique customer service approaches.
  • Mentor and provide on-the-job guidance to newly hired trolley drivers during their initial training and ramp-up period.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

We look for individuals who possess a strong foundation in professional driving and vehicle operation.

  • Possession of a valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL), typically Class B or C.
  • Required Passenger (P) Endorsement on the CDL.
  • Proficiency in operating vehicles with air brakes (if applicable, requiring an Air Brake Endorsement).
  • Skilled in conducting DOT-mandated pre-trip and post-trip vehicle inspections.
  • Expertise in defensive driving techniques and advanced accident prevention strategies.
  • Ability to operate GPS units and other route navigation technologies effectively.
  • Competence in using two-way radio communication systems with clear and professional etiquette.
  • Experience with fare collection systems, including cash handling and electronic payment processing.
