Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Assist senior technicians in performing complex diagnostic procedures using OEM software and scanners to accurately identify engine, electrical, and powertrain issues.
- Learn and perform comprehensive preventative maintenance (PM) services on tractors and trailers, including fluid and filter changes, lubrication, and multi-point inspections.
- Conduct thorough federal DOT annual vehicle inspections, meticulously documenting any defects and performing necessary corrective actions to ensure compliance and safety.
- Perform foundational brake system services, including the inspection, diagnosis, and replacement of brake pads, drums, s-cams, and air system components under supervision.
- Mount, dismount, and balance commercial truck tires, diagnosing irregular wear patterns and ensuring proper inflation and installation.
- Support the diagnosis and repair of vehicle electrical systems, including lighting, starting/charging systems, and tracing wiring harnesses to resolve shorts or open circuits.
- Gain proficiency in servicing and repairing trailer components, including landing gear, roll-up and swing doors, suspension, and structural bodywork.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment in the service bay, adhering to all company safety protocols and procedures.
- Accurately and diligently document all work performed, parts used, and time spent on digital or paper work orders.
- Learn to safely operate shop equipment such as vehicle lifts, floor jacks, specialized diagnostic tools, and welding equipment.
- Perform basic repairs on HVAC systems, learning to diagnose and service components like compressors, condensers, and cabin air filters.
- Assist in the removal and installation of major vehicle components like transmissions, clutches, and differentials.
- Participate in the diagnosis and repair of advanced after-treatment systems (DPF, DEF, SCR), a critical skill in modern diesel technology.
- Shadow and support mobile service technicians on road calls to understand field repair logistics and customer interaction.
- Manage the proper handling and disposal of hazardous materials and waste fluids according to environmental regulations.
- Develop skills in reading and interpreting technical manuals, wiring diagrams, and service bulletins to guide repair processes.
- Perform basic welding and fabrication tasks for minor structural repairs on trailers and truck bodies under expert guidance.
- Conduct vehicle road tests with a certified technician to verify that repairs have successfully resolved the initial complaint.
- Maintain and care for all company-provided and personal tools, ensuring they are in good working order.
- Communicate effectively with service advisors and the parts department to ensure clarity on repair needs and parts ordering.
- Participate in all company-provided and manufacturer-sponsored training sessions to continuously build technical knowledge.
Secondary Functions
- Provide on-demand support to senior technicians for complex diagnostics and heavy repair jobs.

Required Skills & Competencies
Hard Skills (Technical)
- Basic understanding of internal combustion engines and vehicle operating systems (powertrain, brakes, electrical).
- Ability to safely and effectively use a variety of hand tools, power tools, and air tools.
- Foundational knowledge of diagnostic principles and a willingness to learn advanced diagnostic software.
- Mechanical aptitude with a natural ability to understand how things work and a knack for troubleshooting.
- Ability to read and comprehend technical service manuals and schematics.
- Basic computer literacy for navigating work order systems and accessing repair information.
- Knowledge of workplace safety procedures (e.g., lock-out/tag-out, proper lifting techniques).
- Capacity to learn and perform basic welding (MIG/Stick) for minor fabrication and repairs.
