Primary Functions
- Safely operate a Class A commercial motor vehicle in compliance with all Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) and Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations.
- Independently source and secure profitable freight by utilizing load boards, developing relationships with freight brokers, and negotiating directly with shippers.
- Take full ownership of route planning and execution, optimizing for fuel efficiency, delivery schedules, and Hours of Service (HOS) compliance.
- Conduct meticulous pre-trip, en-route, and post-trip inspections of the tractor and trailer to identify and address any mechanical or safety issues proactively.
- Ensure the proper and secure loading, blocking, and bracing of all cargo to prevent shifting or damage during transit, adhering to both legal standards and customer specifications.
- Manage all business finances, including tracking revenue and expenses, invoicing clients, managing cash flow for fuel and repairs, and preparing for quarterly and annual tax obligations.
- Maintain constant, professional communication with dispatch, brokers, and customers to provide status updates, report delays, and confirm delivery details.
- Accurately maintain all required business and compliance documentation, including electronic logs (ELDs), bills of lading (BOLs), proof of delivery (PODs), fuel receipts, and maintenance records.
- Oversee the entire lifecycle of vehicle maintenance, from scheduling preventative maintenance to managing unexpected roadside repairs to maximize uptime and vehicle longevity.
- Negotiate freight rates, fuel surcharges, and accessorial charges on a per-load basis to ensure the profitability and financial health of your business.
- Provide best-in-class customer service at all shipping and receiving locations, acting as a professional representative of your own company to build a strong reputation and encourage repeat business.
- Obtain and consistently maintain all necessary operating authority, licenses, permits (IRP, IFTA), and adequate insurance coverage (liability, cargo, physical damage).
