Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Expertly load outbound trucks, trailers, and shipping containers, ensuring proper weight distribution and adherence to load plans to meet legal and safety standards.
  • Manually lift, carry, and move boxes, cartons, and freight, often weighing up to 50-75 pounds, consistently throughout the shift.
  • Operate material handling equipment such as manual pallet jacks, electric pallet jacks, dollies, and hand trucks to move merchandise efficiently around the dock and into trailers.
  • Systematically stack and arrange products in a tight, logical manner to maximize trailer space and prevent any shifting or damage during transit.
  • Utilize RF (Radio Frequency) scanning devices to accurately track inventory, scan barcodes on freight, and confirm items for each shipment.
  • Read and interpret shipping orders, manifests, and bill of lading (BOL) documents to determine which items need to be loaded and in what sequence.
  • Perform pre-loading inspections of trailers for cleanliness, structural integrity, and to ensure they are free from debris or damage.
  • Secure freight within the trailer using load bars, straps, and dunnage (void fill) to ensure stability and prevent movement during transportation.
  • Wrap pallets with stretch wrap either manually or with an automated wrapper to secure and protect goods before loading.
  • Maintain a consistent and demanding pace of work to meet tight shipping schedules and driver departure times without compromising safety or quality.
  • Collaborate closely with forklift operators to stage freight in the correct sequence and assist in guiding them during the loading process.
  • Conduct visual inspections of all incoming and outgoing freight, identifying and reporting any visible damage, shortages, or overages to the shift supervisor immediately.
  • Adhere strictly to all company safety policies, OSHA regulations, and standard operating procedures (SOPs), including the proper use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment on the loading dock and in staging areas by sweeping, removing trash, and organizing supplies.
  • Communicate effectively with truck drivers to coordinate docking, ensure proper paperwork is exchanged, and facilitate a smooth and timely departure.
  • Label freight accurately with shipping information, destination codes, and special handling instructions as required.
  • Assist in unloading inbound trucks as needed, sorting and staging freight for putaway or cross-docking operations.
  • Participate in daily team meetings to discuss safety topics, performance goals, and any changes in operational procedures.
  • Document and record loading details, trailer numbers, and seal numbers accurately in the warehouse management system (WMS) or on manual logs.
  • Work collaboratively with other members of the warehouse team, including pickers, packers, and supervisors, to ensure a seamless flow of goods through the facility.

Secondary Functions

  • Assist in periodic inventory counts and cycle counts to help maintain inventory accuracy.
  • Provide support in training new team members on proper loading techniques, safety protocols, and equipment operation.
  • Report any malfunctions or maintenance needs for material handling equipment to the appropriate personnel.
  • Contribute to process improvement initiatives by providing feedback on loading procedures and workflow efficiency.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Material Handling Equipment (MHE) Operation: Proficient in using manual and electric pallet jacks, hand trucks, and dollies. Forklift certification is a significant plus.
  • RF Scanner Proficiency: Experience using handheld RF scanning devices for inventory tracking and order verification.
    -Warehouse Management Systems (WMS): Basic understanding of or ability to quickly learn WMS software for tracking shipments.
  • Spatial Awareness & Load Planning: Ability to visualize and execute the proper stacking and arrangement of freight to maximize trailer capacity and ensure safe transport.
  • Basic Math Skills: Ability to perform simple calculations for counting freight and verifying quantities against shipping documents.
  • Understanding of Shipping Documents: Familiarity with reading and interpreting Bills of Lading (BOL), manifests, and pick lists.

Soft Skills

  • Physical Stamina & Strength: Ability to consistently lift heavy objects, stand for long periods, and perform repetitive motions in a physically demanding role.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent.

Preferred Education:

  • Vocational certificate in Logistics, Warehousing, or Supply Chain.

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range:

  • 0-2 years of experience in a warehouse, distribution center, manufacturing, or similar labor-intensive role.

Preferred:

  • 6+ months of direct experience in a loading dock environment.
  • Previous experience operating an electric pallet jack or forklift is highly desirable.
