Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Safely operate heavy or tractor-trailer trucks, including various configurations like dry vans, flatbeds, or tankers, to transport and deliver cargo, materials, or equipment to specified destinations.
- Conduct comprehensive pre-trip and post-trip inspections of the truck and trailer, meticulously checking fluid levels, tire pressure, brakes, lights, and safety equipment to ensure DOT compliance and safe operation.
- Accurately maintain electronic logs of working hours and vehicle service/repair status, following all applicable state and federal regulations (FMCSA and DOT Hours of Service).
- Expertly maneuver trucks into and out of tight loading/unloading positions, including backing into docks and navigating congested industrial yards and city streets.
- Ensure all cargo is properly and securely loaded, balanced, and protected using straps, chains, binders, and tarps to prevent shifting or damage during transit.
- Verify all shipping documentation, such as bills of lading, manifests, and dispatch instructions, to ensure accuracy of freight and destination details before departure.
- Maintain constant and professional communication with dispatchers, providing regular updates on position, progress, and any delays or issues encountered on the road.
- Adhere strictly to all traffic laws, company policies, and safety procedures, including practicing defensive driving techniques to ensure personal, public, and cargo safety.
- Monitor vehicle performance and mechanical condition, promptly reporting any defects, accidents, traffic violations, or damage to the vehicle to management.
- Plan and execute efficient travel routes, utilizing GPS and other navigation tools to manage time effectively and meet strict delivery schedules.
- Provide exceptional customer service during pickups and deliveries, acting as a professional representative of the company at all times.
- Manage all trip-related paperwork, including fuel receipts, expense reports, and delivery confirmations, submitting them in a timely and organized manner.
- Comply with procedures for weighing the vehicle at certified weigh stations to ensure compliance with legal weight limits.
- Perform light maintenance tasks on the vehicle, such as cleaning the interior and exterior, refueling, and checking oil and water levels.
- Couple and uncouple trailers by connecting and disconnecting air and electrical lines, and adjusting the landing gear.
- Operate in various weather and traffic conditions, demonstrating sound judgment and skill in adapting to challenging driving environments.
- Handle hazardous materials according to all established regulations and safety protocols, if certified and required for the load.
- Assist with the loading and unloading of freight, which may involve operating a pallet jack, forklift, or performing manual lifting.
- Maintain a clean and professional appearance and demeanor, reflecting the high standards of the organization.

- Thorough knowledge of Department of Transportation (DOT) and Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) regulations.
