Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Safely operate commercial tractor-trailers (e.g., Class A) over long distances for extended periods, adhering to all federal, state, and local traffic laws and DOT regulations.
  • Conduct thorough pre-trip, en-route, and post-trip inspections of the vehicle, including tires, brakes, lights, fluids, and safety equipment, to ensure roadworthiness.
  • Accurately maintain electronic logs of driving hours, duty status, and vehicle service records using an Electronic Logging Device (ELD) in compliance with Hours of Service (HOS) rules.
  • Properly and safely secure cargo for transport using straps, binders, chains, or dunnage, ensuring load balance and preventing shifting or damage during transit.
  • Manage the loading and unloading of freight, verifying shipping documents and ensuring the accuracy of goods being transported against the bill of lading.
  • Plan and optimize driving routes to ensure timely deliveries, considering traffic, weather conditions, and legal restrictions to maximize efficiency.
  • Maneuver trucks into and out of tight loading/unloading positions, including docks, yards, and various customer facilities, with a high degree of spatial awareness.
  • Professionally communicate with dispatchers, brokers, and fleet managers regarding delivery status, delays, and any issues encountered on the road.
  • Maintain a clean and professional appearance of the vehicle, both interior and exterior, reflecting positively on the company.
  • Perform minor emergency roadside repairs, such as changing tires or installing light bulbs, to minimize downtime and stay on schedule.
  • Adhere to all company policies and procedures, including safety protocols, accident reporting, and communication standards.
  • Handle and process all necessary paperwork, including bills of lading, delivery receipts, fuel receipts, and trip reports, with accuracy and timeliness.
  • Operate vehicle equipment such as liftgates, pallet jacks, or other freight-handling machinery as required for specific loads.
  • Effectively manage time and fuel consumption to meet delivery schedules and operate within budgetary constraints.

Secondary Functions

  • Provide exceptional customer service during interactions at pickup and delivery locations, acting as a professional representative of the company.
  • Monitor and report any mechanical issues or maintenance needs of the vehicle to the maintenance department promptly to ensure preventative care.
  • Navigate weigh stations and inspections with professionalism and ensure all documentation is in order for compliance checks.
  • Maintain constant vigilance for road hazards, changing weather conditions, and security threats to the cargo and vehicle.
  • Successfully couple and uncouple tractor-trailer combinations, including connecting air and electrical lines, and adjusting tandems and fifth wheels.
  • Stay current with transportation industry regulations, safety best practices, and any new company or legal requirements.
  • Participate in mandatory safety meetings, training sessions, and performance reviews to foster a culture of continuous improvement.
  • Manage on-the-road expenses and submit accurate reports for reimbursement in accordance with company policy.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Valid Class A or B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with a clean Motor Vehicle Record (MVR).
  • Proficiency in operating various tractor-trailer combinations and transmission types (manual and automatic).
  • Expert knowledge of Department of Transportation (DOT) and Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) regulations.
  • Competency in using Electronic Logging Devices (ELDs) and other in-cab technology (e.g., GPS, communication apps).
  • Ability to perform comprehensive pre-trip and post-trip vehicle inspections according to a standardized checklist.
  • Skilled in cargo securement techniques appropriate for different types of freight (e.g., flatbed, dry van, reefer).
  • Strong route planning and navigation skills using GPS, maps, and other routing tools.
  • Basic mechanical aptitude for minor on-road troubleshooting and repairs.
  • Ability to safely operate material handling equipment like pallet jacks or forklifts as needed.
