Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Analyze and interpret architectural and structural blueprints, specifications, and sketches to accurately determine the scope and requirements for truss design projects.
  • Create detailed, accurate, and structurally sound roof and floor truss placement layouts for a diverse range of residential and commercial building projects.
  • Utilize specialized truss design software (such as MiTek Sapphire, Alpine IntelliVIEW, or similar platforms) to generate truss profiles, member placements, and connector plate specifications.
  • Perform comprehensive structural analysis on designs to ensure they conform to all relevant local, state, and national building codes (e.g., IBC, IRC) and engineering standards.
  • Calculate and verify appropriate loading conditions, including dead loads, live loads, snow loads, wind loads, and seismic forces, for each specific project location.
  • Optimize designs for material efficiency and cost-effectiveness while maintaining structural integrity and code compliance, providing value engineering suggestions where possible.
  • Generate complete and precise shop drawings, cutting lists, and assembly instructions for the production team to ensure accurate manufacturing of the components.
  • Prepare detailed layout plans and installation guides for contractors and framers in the field, including all necessary bracing and connection details.
  • Review and seal designs in collaboration with an in-house or third-party Professional Engineer (PE) for projects that require an official engineering stamp.
  • Meticulously check and verify the designs of other team members to ensure accuracy, consistency, and adherence to company standards before release to production.
  • Communicate directly with architects, engineers, contractors, and sales staff to clarify design requirements, resolve discrepancies in plans, and provide technical guidance.
  • Manage a portfolio of multiple design projects concurrently, effectively prioritizing tasks to meet tight deadlines and construction schedules.
  • Provide prompt and professional technical support to the sales team during the bidding process by creating preliminary designs and material take-offs.
  • Address and resolve design-related questions or issues that arise from the production floor or the construction job site in a timely manner.
  • Revise and update designs as needed based on change orders, field measurements, or requests for information (RFIs) from the project team.
  • Maintain a deep and current understanding of wood-framing construction practices, building science, and evolving industry trends.
  • Document all design decisions, calculations, and communications thoroughly for project records and future reference.
  • Participate in project kickoff and review meetings to ensure alignment on design intent, schedule, and deliverables among all stakeholders.
  • Prepare and submit repair details or engineering solutions for damaged or modified trusses, ensuring the proposed fix maintains structural integrity.
  • Ensure all final design packages include every necessary document, from engineering seals and layouts to individual truss profiles and hardware lists.

  • Support the sales and estimating teams with ad-hoc data requests and exploratory analysis for potential projects.
  • Contribute to the continuous improvement of the organization's design standards, processes, and best practices.
