Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Operate the Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) from the control cabin, managing all primary functions including steering, propulsion, and excavation.
  • Meticulously monitor and interpret real-time data from the TBM's PLC systems, guidance navigation, and geotechnical sensors to ensure optimal performance.
  • Maintain the TBM's precise trajectory and grade according to engineering plans and survey guidance systems (e.g., VMT, TUnIS).
  • Expertly manage and control excavation face pressure, particularly in Earth Pressure Balance (EPB) or Slurry Shield machines, to ensure tunnel face stability.
  • Regulate the cutterhead's rotation speed, torque, and thrust to adapt to changing geological conditions encountered during excavation.
  • Oversee the automated installation process of precast concrete tunnel lining segments, ensuring accurate and secure ring building.
  • Control the bi-component backfill grout injection process to completely fill the annular void between the excavated ground and the tunnel segments.
  • Manage the mucking process, including the operation of screw conveyors or slurry circuits, to efficiently transport excavated material from the tunnel face.
  • Constantly monitor and manage all TBM-related auxiliary systems, such as hydraulic power units, bentonite and slurry plants, and compressed air systems.
  • Communicate critical operational information, ground condition changes, and TBM status in real-time with the Shift Engineer, Pit Boss, and surface control team.

Secondary Functions

  • Conduct comprehensive pre-shift and post-shift inspections of the TBM and associated equipment, documenting findings and reporting any deficiencies.
  • Actively participate in the maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of TBM mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic systems alongside the maintenance crew.
  • Maintain detailed and accurate daily operational logs, recording production rates, advancement, ring counts, delays, and consumption of materials.
  • Proactively identify potential operational hazards or equipment malfunctions and take immediate corrective action to prevent downtime or safety incidents.
  • Ensure the quality of the constructed tunnel lining, performing visual checks for segment damage, lippage, or misalignment.
  • Adhere strictly to all project-specific safety protocols, including Lock-Out/Tag-Out (LOTO), confined space entry, and emergency response procedures.
  • Actively participate in daily toolbox talks, safety meetings, and job hazard analyses to foster a world-class safety culture.
  • Provide mentorship and on-the-job training to junior operators and other members of the tunneling crew to enhance team capabilities.
  • Coordinate with logistics personnel to ensure a timely and continuous supply of segments, grout materials, lubricants, and other consumables to the TBM.
  • Assist in the performance of planned cutterhead interventions for tool inspection and replacement in both free-air and hyperbaric conditions.
  • Monitor and ensure the proper functioning of tunnel life-support systems, including ventilation, dewatering pumps, and gas detection sensors.
  • Support ad-hoc data requests and exploratory data analysis related to TBM performance and ground behavior.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • TBM Operation Expertise: Proven proficiency in operating modern Tunnel Boring Machines (e.g., EPB, Slurry Shield, Hard Rock TBMs from manufacturers like Herrenknecht, Robbins, CREG).
  • PLC & HMI Systems: Ability to read, interpret, and interact with complex PLC-based control systems and Human-Machine Interfaces (HMIs) for machine operation and diagnostics.
  • Blueprint & Schematic Interpretation: Skill in reading and understanding geotechnical reports, engineering drawings, and hydraulic/electrical schematics.
  • Guidance Systems: Experience using and interpreting data from TBM navigation and guidance systems (e.g., laser-based, gyroscopic).
  • Ground Mechanics: A strong working knowledge of soil and rock mechanics and the ability to adapt excavation parameters to changing geological conditions.
  • Grouting and Annulus Fill: Understanding of mix designs, pump pressures, and volume calculations for backfill grouting.
  • Mechanical & Electrical Aptitude: Strong diagnostic and troubleshooting skills for identifying and resolving operational issues with TBM systems.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent.

Preferred Education:

  • Certificate from a vocational or trade school in Heavy Equipment Operation, Industrial Mechanics, or a related field.
  • Manufacturer-specific TBM operator training and certification.

Relevant Fields of Study:

  • Construction Management
  • Mechanical or Civil Engineering Technology

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range:

  • 5-15+ years of experience in heavy civil construction, with a significant portion in underground or tunneling projects.

Preferred:

  • A minimum of 3-5 years of direct, hands-on experience as a primary operator on at least one major TBM tunneling project from start to finish. Verifiable experience operating machines of a similar size, type, and complexity to the project's TBM is highly desirable.
