Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Craft concise, user-focused microcopy for product interfaces (buttons, labels, error messages, tooltips, form fields, and inline help) that reduces confusion and increases successful task completion.
- Define and maintain voice, tone, and style guidelines for product content to ensure consistent brand personality across platforms and touchpoints.
- Partner with product managers and designers to write user stories and acceptance criteria that include content behavior, edge cases, and localization considerations.
- Collaborate with UX researchers to translate qualitative and quantitative findings into content improvements and experiments that measurably improve user outcomes.
- Design copy-first prototypes and rapid content mockups in Figma, Sketch, or equivalent to test copy in context and accelerate design iterations.
- Develop and maintain content patterns and components within the design system (content libraries, tokens, examples) so content scales consistently across features and platforms.
- Produce onboarding and activation flows that guide new users, reduce time-to-value, and remove first-time user friction.
- Write transactional and notification copy (email, in-app, push) that is timely, clear, and aligned to lifecycle stages and customer expectations.
- Create accessible content that meets WCAG guidelines and supports screen readers and assistive technologies (clear labeling, alt text, idea-flow that works without visuals).
- Draft contextual error messages and recovery instructions that are empathetic, actionable, and reduce frustration and support volume.
- Collaborate with engineering to implement content updates, ensure correct string usage, and handle edge-cases during releases and rollouts.
- Lead or contribute to A/B tests and content experiments to validate wording, CTAs, and information hierarchy using metrics such as conversion, completion rate, and time-on-task.
- Produce and manage localized copy and work with localization/project management teams to ensure translations preserve clarity and intent across languages.
- Audit existing product content to identify content debt, tone drift, localization blockers, accessibility gaps, and opportunities for simplification.
- Establish content governance, naming conventions, and publishing workflows with content owners, product teams, and localization partners to reduce duplication and accelerate releases.
- Create detailed content specs and rationale for engineering handoff, including edge cases, API-driven content contexts, and variable substitution instructions.
- Champion content strategy in cross-functional planning sessions and product roadmaps, advocating for content-led product improvements and measurement.
- Provide copy consulting and review across marketing, help center, and in-product messaging to align cross-channel messaging and reduce inconsistency.
- Mentor and review work from junior writers, designers, and contractors to raise content quality and scale best practices across squads.
- Monitor and analyze content-related KPIs (support ticket trends, task success, NPS text snippets, funnel metrics) and present insights to stakeholders to influence product decisions.
- Create conversational UI copy for chatbots, voice interfaces, and guided interactions with a focus on clarity, context, and predictability.
- Maintain a backlog of content improvements prioritized by impact, effort, and product strategy, and contribute to sprint planning and triage.
- Ensure legal, privacy, and security disclaimers are accurate in UI copy and coordinate with legal and compliance teams on copy changes that carry regulatory risk.
- Document content decisions, research summaries, and experiment outcomes to create a knowledge base for future product and content work.
Secondary Functions
- Support cross-functional initiatives by contributing content expertise to analytics, growth, and customer success projects.
- Assist with ad-hoc content audits and exploratory analyses to identify usability patterns and language-related friction points.
- Contribute to the organization’s content strategy, governance model, and content roadmap to support scaling product offerings.
- Translate product requirements and user needs into clear engineering requirements for content implementation.
- Participate in sprint planning, grooming, and agile ceremonies to estimate content work and align on delivery dates.
- Collaborate with localization vendors and internal translation teams to prioritize strings and validate translations in-market.
- Help maintain the design system’s content documentation and example galleries, ensuring designers and engineers can reuse standardized copy components.
- Provide subject-matter expertise on content accessibility standards and plain-language best practices to the broader product organization.
- Facilitate workshops or writing sessions with cross-functional teams to align on brand voice, content priorities, and UX writing principles.
- Act as a point of escalation for complex or sensitive content decisions that require executive or legal sign-off.
