Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Oversee daily operations of the ultrasound department(s), ensuring efficient scheduling, patient throughput, staffing coverage, and exceptional patient experience across OB/GYN, vascular, abdominal, small parts, pediatric, and cardiac ultrasound services.
- Lead recruitment, hiring, onboarding, and retention strategies for sonographers and support staff, including developing job descriptions, interview processes, and new-hire orientation programs to build a high-performing team.
- Develop, implement, and maintain clinical policies, standard operating procedures, and ultrasound protocols that reflect current best practices, evidence-based standards, and organizational priorities.
- Design and administer a comprehensive competency assessment program for sonographers, including initial orientation competencies, annual skills assessments, and ongoing performance development tied to key quality indicators.
- Ensure department compliance with regulatory requirements, accrediting bodies (e.g., ACR), ARDMS/ARRT credentialing standards, state licensure, HIPAA, OSHA, and institutional policies; lead accreditation preparation and inspections.
- Manage departmental budget, forecasting, and financial performance, including payroll, overtime controls, supply cost management, capital planning for equipment replacement, and cost-savings initiatives.

- Lead equipment lifecycle management: evaluate ultrasound systems, manage procurement and vendor selection, coordinate service contracts and preventive maintenance, and supervise acceptance testing for new technology (e.g., 3D/4D, elastography, doppler enhancements).
- Coordinate scheduling and resource allocation for high-acuity and stat ultrasound requests, interdepartmental consults, and cross-site coverage to ensure timely diagnostic service delivery across all shifts.
- Serve as the primary liaison with vendors, biomedical engineering, IT, and PACS/RIS teams to resolve technical issues, integrate ultrasound systems, manage software upgrades, and ensure interoperability with electronic medical records (EMR).
- Drive staff education, professional development, and credentialing support; design in-service training, case reviews, and continuing education plans to maintain ARDMS/ARRT certification and foster clinical excellence.
- Implement patient safety and infection prevention practices specific to sonography, including probe cleaning/sterilization protocols, safe patient handling, and adherence to facility-wide safety initiatives.
- Conduct performance evaluations, set development goals, provide coaching and corrective action as needed; create succession plans and career ladders to support retention and internal promotion.
- Coordinate and support multidisciplinary committees (e.g., imaging governance, clinical practice committees, patient safety committee) and represent the ultrasound program in hospital operational meetings.

Education & Experience
Educational Background
Minimum Education:
- Associate Degree in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (or related allied health field) from an accredited program.
Preferred Education:
- Bachelor’s degree in Health Sciences, Radiologic Sciences, Healthcare Administration, or a related field; Master’s degree (MHA, MS in Imaging Science, or MBA) preferred for larger systems.
