Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Perform and interpret a high volume of diagnostic ultrasound examinations (abdominal, pelvic, OB/GYN, obstetric fetal, vascular Doppler, musculoskeletal, small parts, and superficial organ studies), producing accurate, clinically actionable reports for referring clinicians.
  • Lead and supervise real-time ultrasound studies and sonographer imaging acquisition to ensure diagnostic quality, proper technique, and adherence to departmental protocols and AIUM/ACR guidelines.
  • Provide advanced obstetric and fetal imaging including first-trimester screening, nuchal translucency measurement, fetal anomaly scans, biophysical profiles, and growth assessments with detailed prenatal reporting and counseling where applicable.
  • Conduct vascular and Doppler ultrasound interpretation, including carotid, lower/upper extremity venous and arterial studies, renal and mesenteric Doppler assessments, and transcranial Doppler when required by service line.
  • Perform and interpret point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) examinations in emergency, critical care, or perioperative settings, including FAST exams, lung, cardiac focused cardiac ultrasound (FOCUS), and procedural guidance for central access and thoracentesis/paracentesis.
  • Execute ultrasound-guided interventional procedures such as biopsies, drainages, aspirations, cyst injections, and musculoskeletal injections, ensuring informed consent, aseptic technique, and complication management.
  • Generate timely, concise, and clinically relevant ultrasound reports in the electronic medical record (EMR/PACS), documenting findings, impressions, and recommendations for follow-up imaging or clinical management.
  • Triage and prioritize urgent and STAT ultrasound studies, provide immediate wet reads or preliminary interpretations for emergent cases, and communicate critical results to the ordering provider in accordance with hospital critical results policy.
  • Participate in multidisciplinary case conferences, tumor boards, and clinical rounds to correlate ultrasound findings with clinical and other imaging modalities (CT, MRI), optimizing patient diagnosis and care pathways.
  • Establish and maintain quality assurance programs for the ultrasound lab, perform peer review, review image quality metrics, and implement corrective actions to meet regulatory, accreditation (AIUM/ACR), and institutional standards.
  • Oversee sonographer credentialing, competency assessments, and protocol standardization; provide hands-on training, mentoring, and performance feedback to ensure staff development and compliance.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • MD, DO, or equivalent medical degree and active unrestricted medical license in the practicing state/province.
  • Completion of an accredited residency in Radiology, Obstetrics/Gynecology, Emergency Medicine, Cardiology, or equivalent clinical training.

Preferred Education:

  • Fellowship training in Diagnostic Ultrasound, Maternal-Fetal Medicine, Pediatric Radiology, Vascular Ultrasound, Echocardiography, or a focused POCUS fellowship.
  • Board certification (or eligibility) in Radiology (ABR/RCPSC), OB/GYN, Emergency Medicine, or Cardiology as applicable.
