Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Develop, document and maintain underwriting program guidelines, rulebooks and decision matrices for multiple product lines to ensure consistent risk selection and alignment with corporate risk appetite and profitability targets.
  • Lead the end-to-end rollout of new underwriting programs and product enhancements, coordinating cross-functional stakeholders (product, actuarial, IT, distribution, legal and compliance) to ensure timely implementation and quality control.
  • Design and manage underwriting authority levels, delegation frameworks and exception approval workflows; evaluate and approve exceptions within delegated limits while escalating complex exceptions to senior underwriters.
  • Monitor underwriting portfolio performance and KPIs (loss ratio, combined ratio, hit ratio, declination reasons, retentions) and prepare executive-level insights and action plans to address adverse trends or opportunities for growth.
  • Partner with actuarial and pricing teams to translate rate and coverage changes into underwriting rules, bind/quote criteria and training materials for frontline underwriters and distribution partners.
  • Configure and optimize policy administration, underwriting and binding systems (e.g., Guidewire, Duck Creek, AMS, or proprietary platforms), including business rules, rating logic and automated eligibility checks.
  • Conduct frequent quality assurance reviews and audits of underwriting files, endorsements and binders to ensure documentation completeness, authority compliance and regulatory alignment.
  • Implement process improvements and automation (RPA, business rules engines) to reduce cycle time for quoting, binding and policy issuance, and to improve data integrity across systems.
  • Design, deliver and maintain comprehensive underwriting training programs, playbooks and decision support tools for underwriters, underwriter trainees, and distribution partners to ensure consistent application of program standards.
  • Serve as the primary program liaison for distribution partners, brokers and MGAs to address underwriting questions, negotiate terms, provide training and resolve escalations affecting program performance.
  • Maintain regulatory and compliance oversight for underwriting programs, ensuring filings, communications and processes meet state and national insurance regulatory requirements and internal audit standards.
  • Coordinate with claims and loss control to incorporate claims trends, emerging exposures and loss mitigation recommendations into underwriting guidelines and acceptance criteria.
  • Manage vendor relationships (loss control providers, data providers, reinsurance partners) tied to underwriting programs and evaluate vendor performance and contractual compliance.
  • Produce and maintain periodic management reports, scorecards and dashboards that synthesize underwriting decisions, exception rates, profitability by segment and other program-level metrics for stakeholders.
  • Support reinsurance negotiations and treaty placement by supplying portfolio segmentation, exposure analysis and underwriting discipline documentation to reinsurance and capital partners.
  • Lead root-cause analysis on underwriting errors, policy lapses and underwriting-related complaints; drive corrective action plans and monitor remediation effectiveness.
  • Oversee change control and versioning for underwriting documentation and systems; ensure historical traceability of guideline changes, approvals and effective dates for audit readiness.
  • Participate in cross-functional product governance forums and new business intake reviews to provide underwriting feasibility, operational impact assessments and timeline estimates.
  • Manage the underwriting intake for special risks, high-limit placements and non-standard accounts, coordinating specialty underwriters, subject matter experts and external partners as needed.
  • Drive consumer and broker experience improvements in the underwriting journey — from quoting to issuance — reducing friction and improving policy conversion rates through streamlined workflows.
  • Maintain and improve data capture and quality standards for underwriting decisions; work with data analytics teams to ensure key fields are structured for reporting and modeling.

Secondary Functions

  • Support ad-hoc business and underwriting analytics requests and collaborate with analytics teams to produce segmentation, profitability and propensity models.
  • Contribute to the organization's underwriting data strategy and roadmap by identifying key data gaps, recommending data sources and promoting structured data collection.
  • Collaborate with IT and business units to translate underwriting process needs into system requirements, user stories and acceptance criteria for sprints and releases.
  • Participate in sprint planning and agile ceremonies for system updates, product launches and automation efforts, ensuring underwriting requirements are prioritized and tested.
  • Provide subject-matter expertise during internal and external audits, regulatory examinations and compliance reviews related to underwriting practices and program controls.
  • Support marketing and distribution enablement by providing program collateral, training sessions and underwriting FAQs that align with commercial messaging.
  • Assist with premium auditing, endorsements processing and mid-term review processes to ensure accurate exposures and timely billing adjustments.
  • Facilitate underwriting committee meetings and prepare briefing materials, risk analyses and recommendation packages for decision-making bodies.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Deep knowledge of underwriting principles and practices across commercial and/or personal lines, including risk selection, pricing fundamentals and coverage nuances.
  • Program management skills: ability to plan, scope, track and deliver underwriting program initiatives, product launches and system changes.
  • Policy administration system configuration experience (Guidewire, Duck Creek, Insurity, EIS or equivalent) including business rule and workflow setup.
  • Proficiency with data analysis tools and query languages (SQL) to extract and analyze underwriting data for portfolio monitoring and reporting.

  • Exposure to reinsurance concepts and ability to prepare portfolio metrics and analyses for reinsurance discussions and treaty support.
  • Familiarity with CRM and distribution systems to support broker/MGA interactions and commission or referral workflows.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Business Administration, Risk Management, Insurance, Economics, Actuarial Science, or related field.

Preferred Education:

  • MBA or Master’s degree in a related discipline, or professional designations such as CPCU, ARM, ARe, AU, or equivalent underwriting/insurance credentials.

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range: 3–7 years of underwriting, underwriting operations, program management or related insurance experience.

Prior exposure to commercial lines underwriting or specialty lines underwriting is highly desirable.
