Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Lead and execute underwriting quality reviews across defined portfolios (mortgage, consumer, commercial, or insurance), evaluating adherence to policy, documentation completeness, pricing accuracy, and regulatory compliance.
  • Design statistically valid sampling plans and audit methodologies to ensure representative coverage of production activity and to support quarterly/annual audit requirements.
  • Develop, maintain, and administer underwriting scorecards and quality dashboards (including trendlines and cohort analysis) to quantify underwriting performance, defect rates, and remediation progress.
  • Perform detailed root cause analysis on underwriting defects, classification of errors by type and severity, and produce actionable recommendations to reduce recurrence and loss exposure.
  • Produce clear, data-driven quality reports and executive summaries for senior leadership, highlighting key issues, risk trends, remediation effectiveness, and recommendations.
  • Collaborate with underwriting managers and line-of-business owners to translate audit findings into targeted remediation plans, policy clarifications, and training curricula.
  • Monitor remediation activities and verify corrective action implementation, re-auditing cases to validate sustained improvements and closure of findings.
  • Maintain and update quality control policies, procedures, and checklists to reflect regulatory change, product updates, or business-rule changes.
  • Execute ad-hoc and recurring compliance testing (e.g., regulatory lending requirements, state insurance mandates) and escalate material findings through the defined governance channels.
  • Partner with Data Analytics and IT teams to design and prioritize automation opportunities, build data extracts, and create dashboards that increase coverage and reduce manual review effort.
  • Use statistical techniques and predictive modeling inputs to identify high-risk segments or underwriters requiring focused reviews and coaching.
  • Conduct one-on-one coaching sessions and group training with underwriters to close knowledge gaps, improve decision consistency, and align behavior with approved guidelines.
  • Validate decisioning engine outputs, pricing models, and rule sets against policy and real-world performance to identify model drift or rule exceptions.
  • Maintain the quality review repository and evidence trail to support internal audit and external regulator requests, ensuring documentation is complete and easily retrievable.
  • Coordinate cross-functional root cause investigations for systemic defects that span underwriting, processing, and post-closing functions, and lead remediation governance meetings.
  • Track and report key performance indicators (KPIs) such as defect density, cycle time impact, rework rates, and financial exposure attributable to underwriting errors.
  • Support new product rollouts and policy changes by performing pre-implementation quality assessments and designing targeted sampling to monitor early performance.
  • Ensure all reviews are conducted in accordance with established SLAs and service standards, escalating risks to management when timelines or quality expectations are at risk.
  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives using Lean, Six Sigma, or other process improvement frameworks to reduce defects, shorten turnaround times, and improve customer outcomes.
  • Coordinate vendor or third-party underwriting quality assessments, ensuring outsourced underwriting conforms to the same standards and remediation expectations.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of market, regulatory, and product changes (e.g., CFPB, FHA, VA, state insurance rules) and incorporate those changes into review criteria and training materials.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Strong Excel skills (pivot tables, advanced formulas, data cleansing) for trend analysis and scorecard development.
  • SQL proficiency to query data warehouses, build case lists, and validate population characteristics.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • Bachelor's or Masterโ€™s degree with coursework or certification in Risk Management, Data Analytics, or Quality Management; certifications such as Six Sigma, Lean, or Certified Internal Auditor (CIA) are a plus.
