Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Conduct comprehensive risk assessments of individual insurance applications or loan/credit files by reviewing applicant information, financial statements, medical records (as applicable), claims history, and third-party reports to determine acceptability and appropriate terms.
  • Apply company underwriting guidelines, rating manuals, and delegated authority matrices to evaluate exposures, calculate premiums or interest rates, and recommend coverage limits, endorsements, or exclusions tailored to risk profile.
  • Analyze financial documents, credit reports, debt-to-income ratios, collateral valuations, and cash flow projections to determine borrower creditworthiness for mortgage, consumer, or commercial lending products.
  • Prepare detailed underwriting decision memoranda that document risk rationale, pricing methodology, and recommended conditions or mitigations to support approval or declination decisions and to facilitate auditability.
  • Make consistent, timely underwriting decisions within delegated authority and escalate non-standard, high-value, or complex risks to senior management or underwriting committees for review and approval.
  • Structure terms, conditions, and policy forms—such as deductibles, sub-limits, coinsurance, and warranties—to balance competitive pricing with acceptable risk retention and loss potential.
  • Collaborate with brokers, agents, loan officers, and relationship managers to obtain missing documentation, clarify exposures, negotiate terms, and explain underwriting decisions while preserving client relationships.
  • Perform risk-based pricing and premium calculations using actuarial guidance, underwriting models, or decisioning systems; adjust pricing to reflect portfolio strategy, reinsurance costs, and market conditions.
  • Monitor and manage an assigned underwriting portfolio to identify trends, concentration risks, and deteriorating exposures; recommend corrective actions such as increased pricing, revised terms, or portfolio rebalancing.
  • Review and apply endorsements, renewals, mid-term adjustments, and policy modifications; evaluate continuing eligibility of risks at renewal and recommend retention or non-renewal when warranted.
  • Coordinate with claims, legal, and compliance teams to ensure underwriting decisions reflect claims experience, regulatory changes, and emerging issues such as fraud, sanctions, or litigation exposure.
  • Maintain accurate underwriting records, endorsements, binding letters, and policy files in the policy administration system to ensure regulatory compliance and support financial reporting needs.
  • Participate in underwriting audits, quality assurance reviews, and management reporting by preparing data, corrective action plans, and process improvement recommendations.
  • Use underwriting tools, rating engines, and predictive analytics (including Excel models and underwriting platforms) to automate routine decisions and improve decision speed and consistency.
  • Identify and escalate potential reinsurance placements or facultative referrals and liaise with reinsurance teams to secure capacity, structure treaties, or negotiate terms for large or unusual risks.
  • Evaluate new products, market opportunities, and competitor positioning; contribute underwriting insight to product design, pricing strategy, and go-to-market plans.
  • Ensure adherence to regulatory requirements (e.g., insurance regulations, lending laws, data privacy) and internal policies; maintain documentation for regulatory exams and internal compliance reviews.
  • Mentor and train junior underwriters and underwriter assistants by reviewing files, providing feedback on decision rationale, and sharing best practices to develop team capabilities and knowledge.
  • Participate in cross-functional projects to implement underwriting technology enhancements, workflow optimization, or machine learning models while providing practical underwriting perspective.
  • Investigate complex or disputed underwriting decisions and provide clear, evidence-based rationales to stakeholders, including executive leadership, brokers, and internal audit.
  • Manage exceptions and endorsement requests for special cases, coordinating approvals and documenting risk acceptance conditions and premium adjustments.
  • Maintain current knowledge of market trends, regulatory changes, industry loss drivers (e.g., natural catastrophe, pandemic, economic cycles), and emerging product risks to adapt underwriting strategies proactively.
  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives to reduce turnaround times, improve hit ratio, and increase portfolio profitability through better risk selection, pricing discipline, and data-driven decisioning.

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • Bachelor's degree in Finance, Business Administration, Economics, Risk Management, Actuarial Science, Insurance, or related field.

Preferred Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree with industry certifications (CPCU, ARM, AINS, RPLU, FLMI, or credit certifications) or a Master's degree (MBA, MSc Finance) for senior roles.
