Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Analyze and document current-state underwriting processes end-to-end across distribution, risk assessment, pricing, approval routing, endorsement handling, and policy issuance to identify bottlenecks, error drivers, and opportunities for straight-through processing (STP) improvements.
- Partner with underwriting leadership, business SMEs, and IT product teams to translate underwriting guidelines and risk selection rules into detailed functional requirements, decision trees, and acceptance criteria for automation and rules-engine implementation.
- Design and maintain target-state underwriting workflows using BPMN, process mapping tools (Visio, Lucidchart), and workflow orchestration diagrams that clearly define roles, handoffs, SLAs, and exception handling to ensure consistent, auditable execution.
- Lead cross-functional initiatives to implement workflow automation solutions (BPM platforms, RPA bots, rules engines, low-code/no-code platforms), including scoping, vendor evaluation, POAM creation, and business case analysis to quantify ROI.
- Configure, test, and validate underwriting rules and decision logic in rules engines and policy administration systems to ensure correct risk selection, rating, underwriting referrals, and endorsement handling consistent with product and compliance requirements.
- Conduct data-driven root cause analysis using underwriting KPIs (cycle time, pass-through rates, referral rates, loss ratio indicators) and operational metrics to prioritize process changes and automation candidates.
- Develop and maintain automated test cases, test scripts, and execute system integration testing (SIT) and user acceptance testing (UAT) to ensure workflow changes meet business requirements and do not introduce regressions.
- Manage change control and deployment processes for underwriting workflow changes, coordinating release windows, rollback plans, and communication to underwriter groups and support teams to minimize business disruption.
- Define and operationalize exception and escalation paths, including rules for manual underwriting interventions, referral thresholds, and SLA-based routing to ensure underwriting governance and timely decision-making.
- Build and maintain dashboards and report packs (Power BI, Tableau, Excel) to monitor workflow performance, exception volumes, automation success rates, and to provide actionable insights to underwriting leadership.
- Act as product owner or proxy for underwriting workflow capabilities, maintaining prioritized backlog of enhancements, technical debt items, and regulatory changes; participate in sprint planning and agile ceremonies with delivery teams.
- Train and onboard underwriters, underwriting assistants, and operations staff on new workflow tools, automation behavior, and updated procedures; create user guides, job aids, and training curricula to drive adoption and compliance.
- Partner with compliance and audit teams to ensure workflow changes align with regulatory requirements, internal policy controls, and data retention or logging standards; prepare artifacts for audits and regulatory reviews.
- Implement controls and data validations to reduce underwriting errors, ensure evidence of risk evaluation is captured, and support audit trails for referrals, overrides, and pricing exceptions.
- Facilitate continuous improvement workshops (Kaizen events), process simulations, and stakeholder design sessions to iterate on workflow designs and accelerate time-to-value for improvement initiatives.
- Quantify cost savings, underwriting capacity improvements, and service-level improvements resulting from workflow automation and process redesign; prepare executive-ready ROI narratives and business performance case studies.
- Coordinate with vendor partners and third-party data providers to integrate external data sources (credit, loss history, inspection reports) into underwriting workflows and rules engines to enhance risk selection accuracy.
- Maintain an up-to-date knowledge base of underwriting workflows, configuration settings, and runbooks to ensure continuity and rapid troubleshooting of workflow incidents or outages.
- Troubleshoot production workflow exceptions and defects, lead post-incident reviews, and drive remediation plans that reduce recurrence and improve resilience of underwriting operations.
- Evaluate and recommend emerging technologies and best practices in underwriting automation, artificial intelligence for risk scoring, and natural language processing for document extraction to modernize underwriting workflows.
- Develop and maintain scenario-based underwriting decision matrices and delegated authority frameworks to support delegation, pricing bands, and referral thresholds within automated workflows.
- Liaise with actuarial and pricing teams to ensure workflow and rules changes capture correct rating logic, endorsement handling, and account-level adjustments, preventing premium leakage and pricing inconsistencies.
- Monitor and enforce KPI-driven SLAs for underwriting teams and vendors, escalate chronic performance issues, and coordinate corrective action plans with responsible stakeholders.
Secondary Functions
- Support ad-hoc underwriting data requests and exploratory analysis to answer business questions related to submission quality, referral drivers, or claims correlations.
- Contribute to the organization's underwriting technology roadmap by identifying capability gaps and recommending phased modernization initiatives.
- Collaborate with business units to translate strategic underwriting objectives into system-level requirements and feature specifications.
- Participate in sprint planning, backlog grooming, and agile ceremonies with product and delivery teams to ensure timely delivery of workflow enhancements.
- Assist in vendor testing, pilot rollouts, and early adopter programs for new underwriting tools and integrations.
