  • Manage the lifecycle of workflow and case-management systems (Pega, Appian, Camunda, Guidewire, custom platforms), including configuration governance, release management, change control, and rollback procedures.
  • Partner with product, underwriting leadership, and data science to define and operationalize credit/risk decisioning rules, scoring models and model governance standards within the workflow environment.
  • Define, monitor and report key performance indicators (KPI) and service level agreements (SLA) for underwriting throughput, cycle time, first-time-right, backlog, and rework—present results and improvement plans to executive stakeholders.
  • Prioritize and manage an intake/backlog process for workflow enhancements, bug fixes and feature requests; facilitate trade-off discussions and maintain transparent delivery timelines.
  • Drive capacity planning, staffing models and throughput forecasting by analyzing case mix, complexity, and seasonality to align underwriter capacity with demand and to recommend outsourcing or triage strategies.
  • Implement quality assurance controls, sampling protocols, and audit-ready documentation to ensure underwriting decisions adhere to internal guidelines and external regulatory requirements.
  • Lead user acceptance testing (UAT), regression testing and production validation for workflow releases; coordinate test plans, test data, defect triage and sign-offs with underwriting SMEs.
  • Facilitate governance forums (change advisory board, rules governance council) to vet business rule changes, exceptions and policy updates that impact workflows and downstream systems.
  • Collaborate closely with IT and engineering teams to build performant, scalable integrations between underwriting systems (e.g., policy admin, document management, data vendors, credit bureaus) and the workflow engine.
  • Manage third-party vendor relationships for core workflow technologies, automation platforms and implementation partners—negotiate SLAs, SOWs, delivery timelines and quality metrics.
  • Design and deliver training, playbooks and job aids for underwriters and operations staff on new workflows, tools, and triage processes to accelerate adoption and minimize change friction.
  • Apply Lean, Six Sigma and other continuous improvement methodologies to identify waste, reduce handoffs and optimize touchpoints within the underwriting lifecycle.
  • Drive exception management and escalation processes to ensure high-risk or complex submissions receive appropriate underwriting expertise without causing systemic delays.
  • Develop and maintain operational dashboards and automated reports (Power BI, Tableau, Looker) to give business users real-time visibility into queue health, SLA adherence and quality metrics.
  • Serve as the subject matter expert for audit, compliance and regulatory requests related to underwriting process controls, including producing artifacts and remediation plans.
  • Lead cross-functional pilots and proofs-of-concept for advanced automation (RPA, decisioning engines, ML-assisted triage) and measure business case ROI before scaling.
  • Manage budget, resource allocation and vendor spend for the underwriting workflow function, delivering cost optimization while maintaining service quality.
  • Coach, mentor and build capability in a team of workflow analysts, process engineers and product owners; set clear goals, performance expectations and development plans.
  • Drive data-driven root cause analysis for exceptions, errors and rework; design permanent fixes in workflow logic, training or data validation to prevent recurrence.
  • Ensure secure handling of PII and sensitive underwriting data within workflows, implementing access controls, encryption, and data retention policies consistent with security and privacy standards.
  • Coordinate lifecycle transitions for legacy systems and migration efforts, minimizing business disruption and preserving transaction integrity across cutover windows.

Secondary Functions

  • Support ad-hoc data requests and exploratory data analysis to inform workflow decisions and capacity modeling.
  • Contribute to the organization's data strategy and roadmap by identifying workflow data gaps and instrumentation needs.
  • Collaborate with business units to translate data needs into engineering requirements and analytic dashboards.
  • Participate in sprint planning and agile ceremonies within the data engineering and underwriting product teams.
  • Create and maintain detailed process documentation, SOPs, runbooks and knowledge base articles for continuity and audit readiness.
  • Participate in vendor selection processes, including RFP drafting, vendor demos, scoring, and reference checks.
  • Represent the underwriting function in cross-company initiatives such as digital transformation, customer experience improvements and compliance programs.
  • Provide second-line support for operational incidents affecting the underwriting workflow engines and coordinate with incident response teams for rapid resolution.
  • Lead post-implementation reviews and continuous improvement retrospectives after major releases or process changes.
  • Support sales and new product launch teams by scoping underwriting operational impacts and workflow readiness for new products or distribution channels.
