Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Safely unload inbound trailers, containers, and vans using appropriate equipment (pallet jack, hand truck, forklift if certified) while following company safety procedures and ensuring product integrity.
- Receive shipments by verifying bills of lading, packing lists, and purchase orders against physical product counts and SKU labels, documenting discrepancies immediately in the WMS or standard paperwork.
- Inspect incoming freight for visible damage, contaminated packaging, or temperature excursions, tag affected items, and escalate damage or quality issues to the supervisor and claims team for follow-up.
- Stage inbound product to designated receiving or quarantine areas according to product type, priority, or storage requirements (e.g., refrigerated, fragile, hazardous), maintaining clear aisles and dock organization.
- Scan and enter received items into the warehouse management system (WMS) or handheld RF device, ensuring SKU, lot, and quantity accuracy to support traceability and inventory accuracy.
- Unwrap, break down, and palletize mixed-case or full-case shipments, ensuring pallets are stacked safely, wrapped securely, and properly labeled for putaway or immediate staging.
- Communicate directly with drivers and carrier personnel to confirm shipment contents, obtain required paperwork, coordinate loading/unloading windows, and ensure timely turnaround of equipment.
- Load and unload roll-cages, conveyor lines, and gravity-fed chutes, keeping product orientation, pallet pattern, and weight distribution in mind to prevent damage during transfer.
- Perform manual handling tasks including repetitive lifting, carrying, and positioning of boxes and pallets up to company weight limits while using correct body mechanics and PPE to prevent injury.
- Operate dock-levelers, ramps, tail lifts, and other dock equipment safely to bridge the trailer-floor gap and enable safe transfer of goods between vehicle and facility.
- Tag and label received inventory with lot codes, expiration dates, or location labels as required by product type or company policy, supporting FIFO/FEFO compliance and minimizing spoilage.
- Coordinate with inventory control and receiving leads to prioritize high-turn or time-sensitive loads and accelerate putaway for peak SKUs or expedited orders.
- Complete required daily logs, temperature checks (for refrigerated/frozen loads), and chain-of-custody forms accurately and submit documentation to receiving supervisors by shift end.
- Assist with cross-dock operations by rapidly unloading inbound product and staging it for immediate reloading to outbound shipments, minimizing dwell time and ensuring on-time delivery.
- Participate in routine cycle counts and physical inventory events by pulling, staging, and validating product to achieve and maintain company inventory accuracy targets.
- Maintain cleanliness and safety of the receiving dock area, including sweeping debris, removing empty pallets, and ensuring all equipment is stored in designated zones to prevent trip and fire hazards.
- Secure bulk and mixed shipments with straps, stretch wrap, and pallet corners when staging for putaway or shipment to prevent shifting and product damage during handling.
- Follow hazardous materials handling procedures when applicable, segregating, labeling, and documenting HM shipments and notifying the appropriate safety officer for special handling requirements.
- Support continuous improvement initiatives by suggesting dock layout or process changes that reduce handling time, minimize product touches, and improve safety or ergonomics.
- Attend and engage in daily safety briefings and pre-shift meetings, proactively raising concerns about potential hazards, near-misses, or process bottlenecks.
- Collaborate with inventory control, quality assurance, and shipping teams to reconcile discrepancies, research missing items, and support root-cause investigations when shipment issues occur.
- Maintain consistent attendance and punctuality to meet scheduled dock windows and ensure the warehouse can meet inbound receiving targets during peak and off-peak periods.
Secondary Functions
- Assist with ad-hoc receiving-related administrative tasks, such as filling out damage reports, filing carrier paperwork, and updating receiving logs.
- Help train new unloading staff on safe handling practices, equipment use, and receiving procedures under the direction of a lead or supervisor.
- Support cycle count teams by retrieving and staging inventory and verifying item locations when requested.
- Participate in continuous improvement and 5S activities to keep the receiving area organized and efficient.
- Perform basic preventative maintenance checks on pallet jacks, rollers, and dock equipment and report malfunctions to maintenance for repair.
- Temporarily support outbound packing or staging during peak periods to maintain workflow continuity and customer service levels.
