Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Conduct comprehensive pre-flight and post-flight inspections of unmanned aerial systems, including airframe, propulsion, flight control surfaces, landing gear, sensors, antennas, and payload mounts; document findings, perform corrective maintenance, and sign off per organizational and regulatory standards.
- Troubleshoot, diagnose, and repair avionics and electrical subsystems on fixed-wing, multirotor, and VTOL UAS platforms using test equipment (multimeters, oscilloscopes, spectrum analyzers), schematic diagrams, and manufacturer technical manuals to restore airworthiness and mission readiness.
- Perform firmware and software updates for flight controllers, autopilot stacks (PX4, ArduPilot, proprietary systems), ground control stations (GCS), and payloads; validate configuration settings, calibrate IMUs/compasses, and verify proper mission scripting before flight.
- Manage battery lifecycle and power systems: inspect, charge, balance, repair or replace LiPo/Li-ion batteries, monitor cell health, implement safe charging/storage protocols, and troubleshoot battery management systems to prevent in-flight power loss and thermal events.
- Integrate, align, and test mission payloads (cameras, gimbals, LiDAR, multispectral sensors, communication relays) including mechanical mounts, electrical interfaces, data links, and sensor calibration to ensure collection of high-quality mission data.
- Perform structural repairs to composite and carbon-fiber airframes, replace damaged components, perform rivet/fastener work, and coordinate with vendors or in-house composite shops for major repairs to maintain airframe integrity and weight/balance limits.
- Maintain accurate maintenance logs, repair records, parts history, and airworthiness documentation in maintenance tracking systems and ensure traceability for inspections, audits, and regulatory compliance (e.g., FAA, EASA, or DoD standards).
- Support flight tests and acceptance flights by configuring GCS, establishing reliable telemetry and command links, performing range and RF checks, coordinating with safety/pilots, and executing flight envelopes to validate repairs, upgrades, or new builds.
- Calibrate and align navigation systems (GNSS/GPS, RTK, IMU/INS), run sensor fusion checks, and resolve position/attitude anomalies that can cause navigation drift or loss of control during autonomous missions.
- Fabricate or source replacement parts, fabricate harnesses, perform connector repair and soldering (through-hole and surface-mount as needed), and update bill of materials (BOM) to reduce downtime and maintain a ready spares inventory.
- Implement and enforce safe handling procedures for hazardous materials and components (batteries, propellers, fuel systems), including PPE, battery disposal, and incident reporting to maintain a safe workshop and flightline environment.
- Assist in mission planning and pre-mission checklists by advising on payload configurations, weight and balance, expected endurance, and environmental limitations; coordinate with pilots and operations teams to optimize mission profiles.
- Run bench-level system tests and automated test rigs to verify subsystem performance after repair or upgrade; design and maintain test scripts and regression test plans for recurrent verification of critical systems.
- Provide first-line technical support during field operations and deployments: perform rapid troubleshooting on-site, execute emergency repairs, swap components, and prepare replacement units for continuous operations under austere or remote conditions.
- Coordinate warranty and vendor repairs for proprietary systems; write RMA requests, work with suppliers on technical escalation, and maintain vendor relationships to expedite repair timelines and component availability.
- Lead root cause analysis for recurring failures using data logs, flight telemetry, and lab diagnostics; recommend engineering changes, maintenance bulletin updates, or environment-specific mitigations to reduce failure rates.
- Configure and troubleshoot communications systems including telemetry radios (915/868/2.4 GHz), encrypted links, LOS/BLOS modems, and ensure frequency management and interference mitigation during operations.
- Maintain, test, and troubleshoot ground support equipment: battery chargers, power distribution units, soldering stations, CNC/3D printers (for field parts), and environmental test chambers used for pre-deployment qualification.
- Support data offload and initial data validation by ensuring sensor data integrity, secure transfer from UAV to ground systems, basic data formatting, and coordinating with data analysts when anomalies are detected.
- Conduct scheduled preventive maintenance and follow maintenance schedules based on flight hours, cycles, and manufacturer recommendations; plan downtime, order parts proactively, and manage maintenance budgets to maximize aircraft availability.
- Adhere to and maintain understanding of relevant regulations and best practices (FAA Part 107, NOTAM coordination, airspace restrictions, export controls, ITAR/EAR as applicable), and implement processes that ensure legal and safe UAS operations at all times.
- Train and mentor junior technicians, pilots, and operations staff on basic maintenance tasks, field repair procedures, safe battery handling, and daily inspection protocols to grow in-house technical capability and reduce turnaround time.
- Participate in continuous improvement initiatives by documenting standard operating procedures (SOPs), safety briefs, and maintenance checklists; propose tooling or process changes to improve repair quality, throughput, or cost-efficiency.
- Perform environmental and stress testing (temperature, humidity, vibration) on repaired or upgraded systems when required to certify readiness for extreme operational environments and ensure mission reliability.
- Maintain and audit spares inventory and parts procurement workflow; track minimum stock levels, lead times, and alternate suppliers to prevent mission delays from parts shortages.

Educational Background
Minimum Education:
- High school diploma or GED with relevant technical certifications and demonstrable hands-on experience; OR equivalent military experience in UAS/avionics/aircraft maintenance.
Preferred Education:
- Associate degree or Bachelor's degree in Avionics, Aerospace Technology, Electrical/Electronic Engineering Technology, Mechanical Engineering Technology, or related technical discipline.
- FAA Airframe and Powerplant (A&P) certification, FAA Remote Pilot Certificate (Part 107) or equivalent national remote pilot license where applicable.
