Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Execute comprehensive pre-flight, in-flight, and post-flight operational procedures and safety checks on unmanned aircraft systems to ensure mission readiness and airworthiness.
  • Skillfully pilot a variety of multi-rotor and fixed-wing unmanned aircraft to capture high-quality aerial data, including photogrammetry, LiDAR, thermal, and multispectral imagery.
  • Develop detailed and systematic flight plans and mission profiles based on project requirements, considering airspace restrictions, terrain, weather conditions, and operational objectives.
  • Maintain strict and unwavering compliance with all Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) regulations, including Part 107, as well as state, local, and company-specific aviation policies.
  • Diligently maintain accurate and detailed flight logs, maintenance records, and operational documentation for all UAS missions and associated equipment, ensuring a clear audit trail.
  • Perform routine and preventative maintenance, inspections, and minor field repairs on the unmanned aircraft, ground control stations, and sensor payloads to ensure optimal performance.
  • Manage the initial processing, organization, and quality control of collected aerial data, ensuring it meets project specifications before handover to data processing teams.
  • Serve as the remote Pilot in Command (PIC), taking ultimate responsibility for the safety of the aircraft, crew, and any persons or property on the ground throughout the operation.
  • Conduct thorough site surveys and risk assessments prior to flight operations to identify and mitigate potential hazards, including obstacles, electromagnetic interference, and public safety concerns.
  • Continuously monitor real-time weather and environmental conditions, making informed go/no-go decisions to guarantee safe and effective flight operations.
  • Expertly troubleshoot and diagnose technical issues with the aircraft, control software, and peripheral equipment in the field, implementing effective solutions to minimize mission downtime.
  • Interface professionally with clients, project managers, and ground teams to communicate mission status, operational constraints, and preliminary findings.
  • Manage all logistics of deploying to and operating from various, often remote, job sites, including the secure transportation of equipment and coordination of ground support.
  • Operate and maintain a range of sophisticated sensor payloads, including high-resolution RGB cameras, LiDAR scanners, and thermal imagers, ensuring proper configuration and data acquisition.
  • Prepare and submit detailed post-mission reports that summarize flight activities, data collected, equipment performance, and any incidents or noteworthy observations.
  • Maintain a robust inventory and management system for all UAS assets, including airframes, batteries, propellers, and ground support equipment to ensure accountability and readiness.
  • Proactively contribute to the development, review, and refinement of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and emergency protocols for the organization's UAS program.
  • Uphold and champion a strong safety culture by applying Crew Resource Management (CRM) principles and actively participating in safety briefings and post-mission debriefings.
  • Coordinate directly with Air Traffic Control (ATC) and other relevant airspace authorities when operating in controlled or complex airspace to ensure deconfliction and safe integration.
  • Secure and manage necessary airspace authorizations and waivers through FAA systems like LAANC and DroneZone for operations requiring special permission.

Secondary Functions

  • Support data processing teams by providing context for collected data and assisting with initial quality assurance checks.
  • Contribute actively to the organization's Safety Management System (SMS) by reporting hazards and participating in safety reviews.
  • Assist in the practical training and mentorship of junior operators, visual observers, and other support crew members.
  • Participate in the evaluation and testing of new UAS platforms, sensors, and software to inform procurement decisions.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • FAA Part 107 Certification: A current and valid Remote Pilot Certificate is the mandatory baseline for any commercial UAS operation in the United States.
  • UAS Platform Proficiency: Demonstrable hands-on experience operating enterprise-grade multi-rotor and/or fixed-wing aircraft (e.g., DJI Matrice series, Wingtra, eBee).
  • Flight Planning Software Expertise: Mastery of mission planning software such as DroneDeploy, Pix4Dcapture, UgCS, or proprietary ground control station (GCS) applications.
  • Sensor Operation: In-depth knowledge of operating and configuring various sensor payloads, including high-resolution RGB, thermal, multispectral, and LiDAR systems.
  • GPS/GNSS Systems Knowledge: A strong understanding of Global Navigation Satellite Systems, including the practical application of RTK and PPK workflows for high-precision data collection.
  • System Maintenance & Troubleshooting: The ability to perform field-level maintenance, firmware updates, and methodical troubleshooting on UAS hardware and software components.
  • Airspace Acumen: A thorough understanding of the National Airspace System, the ability to interpret sectional charts, and proficiency in procedures for obtaining airspace authorizations (e.g., LAANC).
  • Radio Communication Proficiency: The ability to communicate clearly and concisely, particularly for interfacing with Air Traffic Control or other crew members via two-way radios.
  • Data Management Fundamentals: Competency in handling large datasets, including secure data transfer, organized storage protocols, and initial quality assurance checks post-flight.

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent, combined with all required FAA certifications.
