Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Lead end-to-end upgrade projects for equipment, control systems, network infrastructure or facility upgrades: scope definition, risk assessment, resource allocation, scheduling, execution and handover to operations while minimizing downtime and business impact.
  • Develop detailed upgrade execution plans, including work breakdown structures, task sequencing, resource requirements, contingency plans, and cutover procedures to ensure predictable and repeatable upgrade outcomes.
  • Supervise and coordinate multi-disciplinary field teams (electricians, mechanics, control technicians, IT/network specialists) and subcontractors during upgrades, ensuring everyone follows the execution plan, safety protocols and quality standards.
  • Serve as the single point of contact on site for upgrade activities, facilitating daily stand-ups, progress updates, escalation management and clear communication with operations, engineering and corporate stakeholders.
  • Create, review and authorize technical work packages, installation drawings, wiring diagrams, BOMs and as-built documentation; ensure documentation fidelity throughout the upgrade lifecycle for regulatory and maintenance needs.
  • Manage vendor and contractor performance: issue scope packages, evaluate bids, negotiate commercial terms, enforce contract deliverables, monitor timelines and control change orders to limit scope creep and cost overruns.
  • Conduct pre-upgrade inspections and readiness reviews (site walkdowns, spare parts verification, outage coordination) to identify risks, eliminate blockers and optimize cutover windows.
  • Develop and execute commissioning and validation protocols for upgraded systems: functional tests, integration tests, acceptance criteria, software/firmware verification and witness testing with stakeholders.
  • Implement and lead safe system isolation, lock-out/tag-out (LOTO), hot work permits, confined space entry procedures and other site-specific safety practices to protect personnel and equipment during upgrade work.
  • Perform risk assessments and develop mitigation strategies — including rollback plans and fallbacks — to enable rapid recovery if an upgrade adversely affects production or core services.
  • Track project costs, maintain accurate site-level budgets and provide timely cost-to-complete forecasts; collaborate with procurement and finance to approve material purchases and control spend against the project budget.
  • Deploy configuration and change control processes for PLCs, SCADA, network devices or software components: ensure version control, backups, release notes and traceability of all changes introduced during upgrades.
  • Coordinate with operations to schedule outages, coordinate shift turnovers and validate post-upgrade performance during live operation, ensuring service levels and production targets are maintained.
  • Troubleshoot complex equipment, controls or network issues that arise during cutover and commissioning, using diagnostic procedures, vendor support and root cause analysis to resolve incidents quickly.
  • Lead post-upgrade reviews and lessons-learned sessions, producing concise reports with action items to improve future upgrade planning, reduce risk and accelerate acceptance cycles.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable codes, standards and regulatory requirements (electrical code, OSHA, industry-specific regulations) and maintain required permits and inspection records for all upgrade activities.
  • Train and mentor site operations and maintenance teams on new equipment, system changes, updated procedures and preventive maintenance modifications resulting from upgrades.
  • Implement quality assurance and inspection checkpoints throughout the upgrade workflow, ensuring workmanship, alignment, torque settings, wiring terminations and software configurations meet specification.
  • Coordinate spare parts provisioning and logistics for upgrade execution and post-upgrade support to minimize delays and enable rapid recovery for critical assets.

Experience Requirements
