Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Inspect furniture, seats, cushions and frames to diagnose damage and scope reupholstery, restoration or repair work, documenting detailed findings and recommendations for customers or production managers.
  • Prepare cost estimates and time-to-complete quotes for reupholstery and custom upholstery projects, including material takeoffs, labor hours, and fixture/trim costs, and communicate these clearly to clients.
  • Remove existing upholstery, padding, springs and fasteners without damaging frames, salvaging components where appropriate and photographing or labeling parts for accurate reassembly.
  • Measure and create patterns from existing seats and frames or from scratch using templates, full-size patterns and CAD-assisted patterning when required to ensure accurate fit for custom covers.
  • Select appropriate fabrics, leathers, vinyls, foams, batting, adhesives and trim based on use, durability, flame/chemical requirements, aesthetic goals and customer budgets.
  • Cut fabric and foam precisely using hand tools, electric cutting knives, band saws and CNC or hot-wire foam cutting equipment to match patterns and maintain consistent seam allowance.
  • Sew complex upholstery assemblies on industrial and domestic sewing machines, including lockstitch, chainstitch and zigzag, and perform hand-stitching and top-stitching where required for detail work.
  • Rebuild and repair suspension systems including coil springs, sinuous springs, webbing and edge supports, securing and tensioning components to restore seat comfort and structural integrity.
  • Apply padding, batting, foam inserts and edge welt, shaping cushioning with knives, gouges and steam guns, and ensure consistent comfort, line and appearance across components.
  • Attach upholstery to frames using staples, tacks, glue, hog rings, rivets and pneumatic/tack guns, ensuring secure, durable fastening and neat trim lines.
  • Execute decorative techniques such as channeling, piping, welt, tufting, pleating and buttoning with precise spacing and alignment to meet design specifications.
  • Reassemble and refit restored components to frames, verifying alignment, clearance and functionality of moving parts (hinges, recliners, seat slides) and making on-the-spot adjustments.
  • Perform quality control inspections at multiple stages to detect flaws (wrinkles, puckers, mismatch, irregular cushion density) and correct them prior to customer delivery.
  • Maintain accurate job records, material usage logs and inventory of fabrics, foam and hardware to support estimating, ordering and project tracking.
  • Operate and maintain shop equipment (sewing machines, pneumatic staplers, spray adhesives, foam cutters, presses) safely and perform routine preventive maintenance.
  • Adhere to industry safety and environmental standards, including proper handling and disposal of adhesives, flame retardant materials, and solvent-based products, and use PPE consistently.
  • Provide in-person or remote consultations with customers to recommend materials, finishes and design modifications, present samples, and manage change orders professionally.
  • Coordinate with production schedulers, finishers, upholstery welders (for specialized materials) and delivery teams to meet deadlines, staging and shipping requirements.
  • Perform vehicle and marine upholstery installations, including headliners, door panels, seat assemblies and consoles, ensuring water- and sun-resistant finishes when required for exterior/boat applications.
  • Restore antique and period furniture upholstery using conservation-appropriate techniques, historic materials and reversible methods when specified by clients or institutions.
  • Troubleshoot complex fit and comfort issues by isolating cause (frame warping, uneven foam density, spring failure) and proposing cost-effective remedial solutions.
  • Train and mentor junior upholsterers and apprentices in fabric handling, pattern development, sewing and finishing techniques to raise team craftsmanship and throughput.
  • Scale small production runs for contract and commercial work, standardizing workflows, templates and jigs to improve consistency and cycle time.
  • Source and qualify new suppliers for specialty fabrics, leathers, foam formulations and hardware, evaluating samples for durability, colorfastness and compliance with fire code standards.
  • Prepare finished goods for delivery and installation, including protective wrappings, labeling, installation instructions and minor on-site adjustments as needed.
  • Participate in showroom support and trade shows by preparing sample pieces, demonstrating techniques and advising sales teams on material capabilities and limitations.

Secondary Functions

  • Assist with shop organization, tool inventory and repair parts ordering to minimize downtime and maintain production flow.
  • Support sales and estimators by providing technical input on complex materials, lead times and labor requirements.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives to reduce waste, standardize best practices and lower rework rates.
  • Help maintain digital job tracking systems by updating status, logging hours and noting special customer requirements.
  • Provide on-site measurements and installation support for large or awkward pieces that require two-person handling.
  • Participate in periodic training on new materials, adhesives, finishing methods and safety protocols.
