Ideal candidates are detail-oriented, safety-conscious, and motivated to build a career in residential, commercial, marine, or automotive upholstery.

📈 Career Progression

Typical Career Path

Entry Point From:

  • High school graduate or vocational school completer with interest in trades
  • Furniture refinishing or general woodworking helper
  • Sewing machine operator or textile technician transitioning to upholstery

Advancement To:

  • Upholsterer / Journeyman Upholsterer
  • Lead Upholsterer or Shop Supervisor
  • Furniture Restoration Specialist or Custom Upholstery Designer

Lateral Moves:

  • Automotive or Marine Upholstery Technician
  • Textile/Fabric Cutter or Pattern Maker

Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Learn and perform complete stripping of furniture and vehicle interiors, carefully removing old fabric, foam, webbing, springs and trim while preserving underlying frames and hardware for restoration or reupholstery.
  • Measure furniture pieces, take accurate templates and create full-size patterns for fabrics and leathers to ensure proper fit, symmetry, and minimal waste when cutting materials.
  • Accurately cut a variety of materials — woven fabrics, leather, vinyl, foam, batting, and interfacings — using hand tools and power cutting equipment while minimizing material loss and protecting grain and nap.
  • Operate industrial and commercial sewing machines to sew seams, welting, piping, zippers and small components according to shop standards, maintaining consistent stitch length and seam strength.
  • Install and tension sling webbing, coil springs, serpentine springs, sinuous springs and spring seats; learn to tie, attach and repair spring systems to shop and manufacturer specifications.
  • Replace and shape foam cores and cushions: measure, cut, glue, laminate, and finish foam components; perform foam compression tests and match density for consistent seat comfort and support.
  • Perform hand-stitching, bottom-stitching and blind-stitch techniques for exact fit and finish on visible seams, pleats and upholstered edges.
  • Use pneumatic staplers, tack hammers, rivet tools and upholstery knives to secure fabric to frames, ensuring even tension, square corners and clean edges.
  • Prepare frames and woodwork for reupholstery: sand, repair minor wood damage, install corner blocks and ensure structural integrity for safe, long-lasting pieces.
  • Learn and apply adhesive and contact cement techniques for bonding foam, webbing and fabric layers without wrinkling, bubbling or seam failure.
  • Follow detailed work orders and job tickets, interpret customer specifications and sketches, and communicate discrepancies or special requirements to lead upholsterers or supervisors.
  • Assist in material selection and cutting lists; calculate yards of fabric, leather square footage and foam board needed to fulfill jobs while minimizing waste and cost.
  • Perform quality control inspections on upholstery work: check seam alignment, fit, trim, staple patterns, and overall finish prior to delivery or final approval.
  • Clean, maintain and sharpen hand tools and routine maintenance on sewing machines and shop equipment; log maintenance issues and escalate to supervisors as needed.
  • Observe and adhere to workplace safety, material handling and hazardous material procedures, including safe use of adhesives, solvents, dust control and PPE.
  • Support shop logistics: load/unload parts, organize material inventory, label and store fabrics, and stage projects to maintain continuous workflow.
  • Participate in apprenticeship classes, on-the-job training and mentorship sessions; document training hours and skill progression as part of a certified or in-house apprenticeship program.
  • Prepare and apply decorative trim, welting, buttons, tufting, pleats, and piping for both residential and commercial-grade upholstery projects.
  • Assist with minor upholstery repairs and quick-turn service jobs: reattach loose trim, resew seams, replace zippers and fasten missing hardware while maintaining turnaround targets.
  • Help dismantle and reassemble seats and interiors for automotive, marine and specialty projects, routing trim and electrical connections safely and per shop standards.
  • Create and maintain clear job documentation, including before-and-after photos, material lot notes, and measurement records to support warranty and rework prevention.
  • Follow sustainable waste management practices: recycle scrap materials where possible, responsibly dispose of solvents and foam offcuts, and advise on material reuse.
  • Support customer-facing activities when required: receive items for repair, explain simple repair options, and assist with pickup and delivery scheduling under supervision.

Secondary Functions

  • Assist with shop organization and continuous improvement initiatives: 5S, tool shadowing, inventory counts and restocking of consumables like staples, needles and thread.
  • Support order processing: receive and check materials shipments, verify fabric rolls for defects, and notify purchasing of short or damaged supplies.
  • Participate in small-scale sample making and prototype builds to test new techniques, materials, or custom trim details before full production.
  • Provide occasional on-site upholstery support for installations, removals, and measurement verification at customer homes, offices, or job sites.
  • Help maintain digital job records and timing logs; input job status updates in shop management software as directed by supervisors.
  • Attend periodic safety and skills workshops to maintain compliance with shop training requirements and to advance technical certifications.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)
