  • Sewing Machine Operator or Textile Cutter with experience in industrial sewing and cutting techniques.

Advancement To:

  • Senior Upholstery Builder / Lead Upholsterer responsible for complex projects, quality sign-off, and team mentoring.
  • Shop Supervisor or Production Manager overseeing upholstery production schedules, materials procurement, and shop workflow.
  • Custom Upholstery Specialist / Designer working on high-end or bespoke furniture, automotive or marine interiors.
  • Estimator or Sales Engineer for upholstery contracts and restoration projects.

Lateral Moves:

  • Pattern Maker / Template Maker for upholstery layouts and CAD-based pattern development.
  • Foam Fabricator / CNC Foam Cutter Operator focusing on foam profiles and automated cutting operations.
  • Quality Inspector specializing in materials, seams, and finish standards.

Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Read and interpret technical drawings, blueprints, spec sheets and design mock‑ups to develop accurate patterns and work plans for upholstery assembly and repair.
  • Measure frames, cushions, shells and interior surfaces precisely, calculate material yields, and lay out cutting lines to minimize waste while meeting design tolerances.
  • Create and modify patterns and templates for fabric, leather and vinyl covers using manual and digital tools, ensuring proper grain and stretch orientation for each material.
  • Cut upholstery fabrics, leather, vinyl, foams and underlayment using hand tools, clicker presses, band knives and CNC cutters while maintaining consistent edge quality and adherence to safety protocols.
  • Operate industrial sewing machines (walking foot, cylinder arm, post bed, and overlock) to sew seams, channels, pleats, piping, zippers and reinforcements to exact stitch counts and thread tensions.
  • Fabricate seating components including foam shaping, adhesion, wrapping, tufting, buttoning and welt insertion, selecting appropriate foam densities and adhesives for durability and comfort.
  • Install spring systems, tie coil and eight-way hand-tied springs, serpentine springs, and jute webbing; replace or repair spring anchor systems and ensure proper seat tension and support.
  • Upholster frames and shells using staples, tacks, adhesives and mechanical fasteners; trim and finish exposed areas to meet aesthetic and ergonomic requirements.
  • Work with leather and vinyl materials applying proper stretching, skiving, seam preparation and heat-assisted techniques to prevent wrinkles, puckers and color distortion.
  • Apply high-quality surface finishing including edge welting, binding, dust covers, skirt attachment, and hardware installation (hinges, slides, brackets) to meet customer expectations.
  • Conduct repairs and restoration work on damaged furniture, automotive seats or marine interiors including patching, rewebbing, foam replacement and structural reinforcement.
  • Perform tufting and buttoning techniques for classic and contemporary furniture styles, ensuring symmetrical placement, even tension and proper anchor reinforcement.
  • Select, cut and assemble multi-layer laminate and composite materials used in specialized seating or interior modules for commercial and marine applications.
  • Prepare and maintain production documentation including material usage logs, production tickets, defect reports and work order sign-offs for traceability and continuous improvement.
  • Collaborate with designers, estimators and project managers to evaluate prototypes, suggest material alternatives, and provide time and cost estimates for custom projects.
  • Troubleshoot manufacturing problems in real time (seam failures, misaligned patterns, machine thread breakage) and implement corrective actions to keep production on schedule.
  • Maintain and calibrate upholstery equipment and power tools including sewing machines, pneumatic staplers, webbing stretchers and presses to ensure consistent output and reduce downtime.
  • Ensure adherence to health, safety and environmental regulations (proper ventilation, adhesive handling, fire retardancy requirements) and enforce PPE and lockout/tagout procedures.
  • Train and mentor junior upholsterers and apprentices on shop best practices, sewing techniques, pattern development and quality standards to build team capability.
  • Coordinate with procurement and inventory teams to track fabric, foam, webbing and hardware stock levels, place reorder requests and identify cost-saving material substitutions.
  • Perform final inspection on completed assemblies for structural integrity, seam uniformity, color match and cosmetic finish, documenting defects and rework items before customer delivery.
  • Adapt upholstery methods for specialized markets (marine-grade adhesives and hardware, automotive seat foam densities and safety standards, commercial contract durability requirements) and maintain relevant certifications.

Secondary Functions

  • Support custom order intake by reviewing special requests, confirming material availability and producing sample swatches or mock-ups for client approval.
  • Participate in prototype reviews and pilot runs, providing feedback to design and engineering teams to improve manufacturability and serviceability.
  • Assist with shop organization projects, 5S implementation, and continuous improvement initiatives to optimize workflow, reduce waste and increase throughput.
  • Provide after-sales technical guidance, refurbishment estimates and maintenance recommendations to customers and service teams.
  • Help schedule machine maintenance and coordinate outside service technicians for complex equipment repairs or upgrades.
  • Maintain clean and safe work areas by following company housekeeping standards and reporting hazards or damaged equipment promptly.
