Primary Functions

  • Accurately measure furniture frames, seat pans, backs and vehicle interiors using tape measures, templates and digital measuring tools; translate measurements into cutting patterns and material estimates to ensure proper fit and minimize waste.
  • Create and modify paper or fabric patterns for upholstery components, including seat covers, cushions, welt, piping and trim; adapt patterns to accommodate irregular shapes, springs and custom client requirements.
  • Cut fabric, vinyl and leather with precision using straight knives, shears, electric cutters or CNC cutting tables, managing grain, nap direction and pattern matching to maintain visual continuity and structural integrity.
  • Operate industrial and domestic upholstery sewing machines to sew seams, attach webbings, assemble slipcovers and construct custom cushions, ensuring consistent stitch quality and seam strength appropriate for the material and use-case.
  • Build, repair and replace foam cushions and padding — shape foam with electric knives, hot-wire cutters or hand tools, choose appropriate densities and apply Dacron or batting for comfort and appearance.
  • Fit and install upholstery on furniture frames, chairs, sofas, benches and vehicle interiors using hog rings, staples, tacks, adhesives and stitching; trim excess materials and finish edges for a professional appearance.
  • Repair or replace springs, webbing and internal supports; carriage and attach seat internals to restore original function, eliminate sagging and meet manufacturer tolerances for comfort and safety.
  • Perform on-site installation and removal of upholstery for residential, commercial and automotive clients, coordinating logistics, protecting customer property and ensuring accurate reassembly.
  • Execute custom upholstery builds for new furniture orders, commercial fit-outs and bespoke commissions by reading work orders, interpreting sketches and applying fine finishing techniques.
  • Inspect incoming work orders, review specifications and material lists, and prepare job kits with correct fabrics, hardware and cutting patterns to maintain production flow and reduce downtime.
  • Maintain and calibrate sewing machines, cutting equipment and pneumatic tools, including routine lubrication, needle replacement, belt adjustments and troubleshooting mechanical issues to keep the shop operational.
  • Apply adhesives, spray foams, coatings and leather conditioners as required; understand drying/curing times and safe handling of solvents and adhesives to achieve durable bonds without damaging materials.
  • Perform patching, restuffing and surface repairs on worn or damaged upholstery, matching materials and color, and using techniques such as glue-in patches, stitching in place and strategic re-padding to restore appearance.
  • Document finished work with photographs and written notes for customer records, warranties and quality control, including material usage, alterations made and time to complete.
  • Coordinate with designers, project managers and customers to review material samples, recommend fabric and cushion specifications, provide cost and time estimates and manage expectations on lead times.
  • Load, secure and transport completed furniture and seating to job sites; perform safe manual handling and use of dollies, straps and vehicles to prevent damage in transit.
  • Enforce health and safety standards in the workshop and on-site, including proper PPE for chemical use and machine operation, and maintain clear access to exits, fire extinguishers and first-aid kits.
  • Maintain inventory of fabrics, foams, webbing, adhesives and hardware; track stock levels, rotate materials by lot and communicate reorder needs to purchasing to prevent production delays.
  • Train and mentor junior upholsterers and apprentices on cutting, sewing, stapling, finishing techniques and shop best practices; review their work and provide corrective feedback to accelerate skill development.
  • Troubleshoot fit and finish problems during mock-ups and dry fittings, quickly implementing alterations such as re-cutting panels, adjusting welting or modifying attachment points to meet quality standards.
  • Apply specialized techniques for leather work (skiving, edge finishing, wet molding) and for commercial seating standards (fire-retardant materials, reinforced seams) when applicable to the project.
  • Maintain detailed time and materials logs for each job to support invoicing, warranty work and job costing in small shops or as directed by the production manager.
  • Participate in estimating and quoting for repair and custom work by calculating material costs, labor hours and necessary hardware, and communicating clear scope-of-work to the sales or service team.
  • Provide professional on-site customer service: walk clients through completed installations, explain care instructions for fabrics and leather, and document any customer feedback or warranty concerns.

  • Assist with shop organization projects such as layout improvements, storage optimization and standardizing tool locations to increase throughput and reduce errors.
  • Support quality assurance processes by participating in pre-shipment inspections, tagging non-conforming items and implementing corrective actions with the production team.
  • Help receive and unpack raw materials and subcontracted components, verifying delivery contents against purchase orders and reporting discrepancies to purchasing or management.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives: suggest tooling changes, process adjustments or material substitutions that reduce cost, improve ergonomics or shorten cycle time.
  • Cover for scheduling and customer coordination in smaller shops, including accepting inbound service calls, confirming appointments and updating job status in the shop management system.
