As an Upholstery Intern you will assist experienced upholsterers and restoration specialists with the full lifecycle of upholstery projects, from initial assessment and material selection through fabric cutting, sewing, stuffing and final finishing. You will develop practical skills in reupholstery, furniture repair, and textile handling while maintaining shop safety, tool care, and job documentation. Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Assist senior upholsterers in inspecting and assessing furniture pieces to identify structural issues, fabric condition, foam integrity, and hardware needs before creating reupholstery plans and material lists.
  • Measure furniture components precisely and transfer measurements into patterns or cutting templates, ensuring accurate fabric layout to minimize waste and maintain pattern match for seams.
  • Remove old fabric, tacks, nails, webbing and padding carefully from chairs, sofas, headboards and other items, documenting original construction and any repairs needed for accurate restoration.
  • Operate industrial and domestic sewing machines under supervision to sew cushions, covers, piping, and bespoke upholstery components according to specifications and shop quality standards.
  • Cut upholstery fabric, leather and foam using hand tools and power tools following patterns and grain lines, while maintaining consistent seam allowances and edge finishes.
  • Prepare, shape and glue foam, batting and stuffing materials for cushions and seating using industry adhesives and heat tools as instructed, ensuring comfort and correct seat height.
  • Execute webbing, spring tying and suspension repairs, including untying and retying knots, installing new J-springs, coils, or sinuous springs under mentor supervision.
  • Learn and perform tufting, channeling, box cushion construction and button application with attention to symmetrical placement and tension control for high-quality finished pieces.
  • Assist with frame repairs including minor woodworking tasks such as regluing joints, replacing dowels, reinforcing weak areas and prepping surfaces for upholstery application.
  • Staple and tack fabric to frames using pneumatic staplers and hand tools, maintaining straight, secure lines with consistent tension to prevent puckering or sagging.
  • Perform leather-specific tasks such as skiving, hand-stitching, and edge finishing while following leather grain orientation and tensioning best practices to avoid stretching or distortion.
  • Follow detailed cutting layouts for repeat patterns and stripes to ensure matches across cushions and panels, and keep accurate cut lists for inventory reconciliation.
  • Conduct quality checks at each production stage, identifying and reporting defects, alignment issues, loose stitching, or failing hardware to the lead upholsterer before final delivery.
  • Assist in preparing samples, swatches and mock-ups for client approvals and trade show preparation, documenting fabric codes, yardage used and recommended cleaning instructions.
  • Maintain detailed job cards, time logs and project photographs for the shop’s records and portfolio, ensuring traceability of materials, finishes and repairs performed.
  • Learn to prepare cost estimates and basic job quotes under supervision, including labor time, material quantities, and special finishes or hardware considerations.
  • Communicate with customers professionally when asked to participate in pick-ups or drop-offs, noting delivery constraints and receiving client feedback to relay back to the lead upholsterer.
  • Use and maintain hand and power tools safely, perform routine tool checks and report maintenance needs to prevent downtime and ensure a safe working environment.
  • Adhere to shop cleanliness, waste disposal and recycling protocols for fabric scraps, foam and hazardous adhesives, and help maintain organized storage for materials and hardware.
  • Participate in training sessions, vendor presentations and supplier visits to stay current on new fabrics, sustainable materials, adhesives, and upholstery fasteners.
  • Support production scheduling by prepping upcoming jobs (cutting, labeling and staging materials) to enable smooth workflow and on-time customer deliveries.
  • Help assemble and finish final pieces including trimming, cleaning, and installing decorative elements such as welt, gimp, fringe and exposed wood trim before client handoff.

Secondary Functions

  • Assist in inventory management, receiving shipments, labeling fabric bolts, updating stock counts and rotating materials to reduce damage or obsolescence.
  • Prepare shop workspaces and protect finished furniture for storage, transport or staging, including shrink-wrapping, blanket wrapping and strapping for delivery.
  • Support safety compliance by using personal protective equipment, participating in toolbox talks, and reporting hazards or incidents immediately to supervisors.
  • Create and maintain photographic records for insurance, restoration documentation and marketing use, tagging images with job numbers and material notes.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives by suggesting workflow or layout changes based on shop experience and observed bottlenecks.
  • Assist with light administrative tasks such as answering phones, scheduling appointments, and coordinating with external suppliers for hardware and fabrics.
  • Participate in team meetings and job planning sessions, offering status updates on assigned tasks and flagging items that require senior input or reordering.
  • Help prepare and organize tools and equipment for off-site installations, ensuring all necessary materials and fittings are included and secured for transport.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Proficient use of basic upholstery hand tools: tack pullers, pliers, hammers, mallets, upholstery needles, and webbing stretchers.
  • Experience or training on industrial sewing machines, including straight stitch, zig-zag, and heavy-duty upholstery machines and ability to change needles and threads.
  • Accurate measuring and pattern layout skills for fabric cutting, including understanding grain, nap, and pattern repeat for optimal visual results.
  • Foam cutting, shaping and adhesive application skills, plus familiarity with different foam densities, batting types and cushion cores.
  • Knowledge of suspension systems (webbing, coil springs, sinuous springs) and the ability to perform basic spring and webbing repairs or replacements.
  • Leather handling skills: cutting, skiving, hand-stitching and edge finishing of leather upholstery.
  • Basic frame repair and woodworking skills such as gluing joints, doweling, sanding and light carpentry to restore furniture structure.
  • Skilled use of pneumatic staplers and tackers with consistent tension control and staple placement for secure attachment.
  • Pattern making and replication skills to reproduce cushion covers, bench pads, and tailored panels from existing pieces.
  • Familiarity with upholstery adhesives, solvent safety, and recommended application techniques for bonding foam and fabric.
  • Ability to perform quality inspection against shop standards: seam alignment, stitch integrity, fabric tension, and finish detailing.
  • Competence with basic estimating tools and the ability to calculate yardage, labor hours and standard hardware needs for reupholstery jobs.
  • Knowledge of textile and fabric types (woven, knit, velvet, chenille, performance fabrics) and recommended cleaning/maintenance guidance.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • High school diploma or equivalent; vocational coursework in textiles, sewing or woodworking is advantageous.

Preferred Education:

  • Certificate or diploma from an upholstery/vocational school, furniture restoration program, or commercial sewing course.
  • Short courses in leatherworking, textile care, or furniture conservation.
