Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Operate and set up industrial upholstery sewing machines (post-bed, cylinder-bed, walking foot, long arm, and serger machines) to sew a wide variety of fabrics, leather, vinyl, and composite materials to exact specifications and production standards.
  • Read and interpret technical drawings, patterns, templates, and work orders to determine stitching sequence, seam allowance, trim placement, and assembly order for each upholstery project.
  • Measure and transfer dimensions from drawings or existing products to pattern paper, fabric, and leather, ensuring accurate placement of seams, panels, zippers, snaps, piping, and welting.
  • Cut fabrics, leather, and foam accurately using hand tools, band knives, hot knives, CNC cutters, or CNC/automatic cutting equipment, optimizing yield to reduce waste and cost.
  • Create, adjust, and fit patterns and templates by hand or using CAD/CAM pattern software to accommodate product changes, custom orders, or fit issues, and ensure consistent repeatability in production.
  • Stitch complex seams, corners, darts, and pleats, apply welt cord, top-stitching, and decorative seams while maintaining stitch quality, tension balance, and visual consistency across batches.
  • Assemble upholstery components including cushions, backs, seats, bolsters, armrests, and door panels using staples, adhesives, rivets, and mechanical fasteners to manufacturer specifications.
  • Perform tufting, channel sewing, quilting, and pleating operations to produce decorative and structural quilting patterns on seating and interior surfaces.
  • Install and finish edge treatments, binding, piping, grommets, zippers, and snap systems, ensuring proper alignment, functionality, and aesthetic finish.
  • Work with foam fabricators to specify foam density, thickness, and cut profiles; trim and shape foam components by hand or with foam-cutting machinery for proper ergonomics and fit.
  • Inspect sewn assemblies and finished upholstery for defects such as skipped stitches, puckering, misaligned seams, or material flaws and perform rework or repairs to meet quality control standards.
  • Maintain and adjust sewing machines: change needles, replace bobbins, adjust presser foot pressure and thread tension, and perform routine lubrication and preventive maintenance to minimize downtime.
  • Collaborate with production planners and lead technicians to estimate labor hours, suggest process improvements, and meet daily or weekly production quotas while maintaining quality.
  • Build prototypes and samples for new products or custom jobs, iterating with product designers or clients to ensure fit, form, and function before moving to production.
  • Prepare and maintain accurate job documentation, including cut lists, material usage logs, operation cards, and completion reports required for traceability and inventory control.
  • Train and mentor junior machinists, apprentices, and sewing operators in proper machine techniques, fabric handling, and shop safety procedures to raise overall team competency.
  • Operate and maintain specialty upholstery equipment such as pneumatic staplers, tackers, grommet setters, button covering machines, and webbing stretchers safely and effectively.
  • Apply adhesives and bonding agents for perimeter gluing, foam laminations, or multi-layer assemblies, ensuring correct curing and bond strength per manufacturer instructions.
  • Coordinate with design, procurement, and finishing teams to verify materials, trims, interfacings, and hardware are correct for each job and escalate discrepancies to supervisors.
  • Follow workplace safety rules and personal protective equipment (PPE) requirements, maintain a clean and organized workstation, and participate in shop safety audits and hazard mitigation.
  • Diagnose and troubleshoot fit or sewing issues in real time, proposing adjustments to patterns, fixtures, or machine settings to reduce scrap and rework.
  • Participate in continuous improvement initiatives (Lean, 5S, Kaizen) by suggesting fixture improvements, workflow changes, or tooling modifications that improve throughput or quality.
  • Maintain a working knowledge of textile and leather behavior (stretch, grain, nap, backing) to pre-emptively compensate for material changes during cutting and sewing.
  • Ensure final product packaging and labeling meet shipping and client specifications, and support the shipping department by staging finished goods and completing pick lists or pack sheets.

Secondary Functions

  • Support inventory management by reporting material usage, low-stock items, and waste to purchasing or inventory control.
  • Assist in sample room maintenance: catalog sample pieces, keep a library of pattern templates, and prepare samples for client review or QA.
  • Participate in cross-functional meetings with sales, design, and project management to provide production feasibility feedback on custom orders.
  • Help evaluate supplier trim samples, hardware, and fabric/test results for production suitability and maintenance of material standards.
  • Contribute to documentation updates for standard operating procedures (SOPs), work instructions, and job safety analyses (JSAs) as processes evolve.
  • Support occasional field installations or on-site repairs for high-value or custom projects when required by the client or project schedule.
  • Participate in time studies and reporting to help refine job standard times and support accurate quoting by estimating departments.
  • Assist with packaging, labeling, and staging finished components for shipment during peak production periods.

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Proficient operation of industrial upholstery sewing machines: post-bed, cylinder-bed, walking foot, coverstitch, and overlock/serger machines.

  • Working knowledge of fabric and leather characteristics (grain, nap, stretch, durability) and how material choice affects sewing and assembly.
  • Basic math and measuring skills for converting dimensions, creating cut lists, and calculating material yield.
  • Experience with upholstery adhesives, bonding procedures, and cure times for laminations and multi-layer products.
  • Ability to complete and maintain production documentation: job cards, cut lists, quality checklists, and material usage logs.
