Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Supervise and coordinate daily upholstery operations across cutting, patterning, sewing, foaming, webbing and final assembly to meet production schedules and delivery deadlines while maintaining premium finishing standards.
  • Lead, coach and schedule a cross-functional team of upholsterers, sewers and finishers; assign tasks based on skillset, monitor productivity, and deliver performance feedback and corrective action when required.
  • Develop, document and enforce standard operating procedures (SOPs), work instructions and quality checkpoints for stitching, welt insertion, tufting, stapling and trim to ensure consistent product quality and reduce rework.
  • Inspect inbound materials (fabrics, leathers, foams, adhesives, trims) for conformance to specifications, coordinate with purchasing for quality issues and manage fabrication rejects to minimize production delays.
  • Read and interpret technical drawings, patterns, customer specifications and engineering change notices to set up jobs accurately and ensure the finished product conforms to design requirements.
  • Oversee machine setup and operation for industrial sewing machines, CNC cutters, foam cutting equipment and pneumatic staplers; troubleshoot machine issues and coordinate preventative maintenance with the maintenance team.
  • Implement and monitor production KPIs (throughput, yield, scrap rate, on-time delivery, labor hours per piece) and produce daily/weekly reports to senior management with improvement plans where necessary.
  • Plan and allocate labor and equipment resources to balance workloads across stations, optimizing cycle times and minimizing bottlenecks for mixed production and custom orders.
  • Train new hires and provide ongoing technical upskilling for sewing techniques, pattern matching, seam allowances, welt and piping attachment, and proper use of hand and power tools.
  • Conduct regular quality audits, in-process inspections and final inspections; identify root causes for defects (stitching failures, improper trimming, poor upholstery tension) and implement corrective actions.
  • Manage batch tracking, lot control and documentation for warranty, traceability and regulatory compliance for commercial or automotive interior projects.
  • Estimate labor and material requirements for new jobs and prototypes; work with cost engineers and purchasing to control material usage, reduce waste and identify opportunities for cost savings.
  • Coordinate with design, product development and customer service teams during samples, prototypes and change requests to ensure manufacturability and customer expectations are aligned.
  • Supervise repair and refurbishment work for returned or in-warranty items; create repair protocols and ensure repaired goods meet original quality standards before re-release.
  • Enforce safe work practices and compliance with OSHA and company safety programs; lead toolbox talks, incident investigations and hazard mitigation for sewing rooms and fabrication areas.
  • Maintain shop floor housekeeping, tool control and ergonomic best practices to reduce injuries and maintain an organized production environment.
  • Participate in continuous improvement (Kaizen) initiatives: propose workflow changes, cell layouts, jigs/fixtures and process controls to increase productivity and quality.
  • Manage vendor and subcontractor relationships for specialty upholstery services, outsourced sewing or foam cutting; coordinate schedules and evaluate vendor performance.
  • Prepare, review and maintain production documentation: job travelers, operation sheets, time studies and training records to ensure consistency and traceability.
  • Resolve escalated production issues and customer complaints; conduct root cause analysis, implement containment and long-term corrective actions and communicate outcomes to stakeholders.
  • Oversee inventory control for fabrics, leathers, foam, adhesives and trim; set par levels, perform cycle counts and collaborate with purchasing to prioritize critical items for production continuity.
  • Approve tooling, fixtures and sewing patterns for new product introductions; validate first-article inspections and sign off on sample production runs.
  • Schedule and manage overtime effectively to meet demand peaks while controlling labor cost and maintaining team morale.
  • Mentor and develop succession plans for key technical roles; identify high-potential technicians and create development pathways to strengthen the upholstery workforce.

Secondary Functions

  • Support cross-functional projects such as new product launches, layout changes and capacity planning to align upholstery capabilities with business objectives.
  • Assist the HR function with recruiting, interviewing and onboarding skilled upholsterers and sewing technicians.
  • Coordinate with logistics and shipping for staging, packaging and dispatch of finished goods to meet customer delivery windows.
  • Maintain and update training materials, process documentation and machine manuals to keep procedures current and accessible.
  • Participate in budget preparation and capital requests for equipment upgrades and tooling investments.
  • Lead initiatives to reduce waste (fabric offcuts, foam scrap) through nesting, yield optimization and re-use programs.
  • Serve as primary point of contact for floor-level escalations during night and weekend shifts when applicable.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Advanced upholstery techniques: hand-stitching, welt/cording, tufting, box cushion finishing and trim application.
  • Industrial sewing machine operation and troubleshooting (walking foot, cylinder-bed, post-bed and blindstitch).
  • Pattern making and interpretation; cutting techniques for woven fabrics, leather and simulated leather.
  • Foam fabrication and cutting knowledge, including CNC foam cutting or band saw usage and foam laminating processes.
  • Proficiency with staple guns, pneumatic staplers, webbing machines and upholstery hand tools.
  • Blueprint/technical drawing reading and translating measurements into production setups.
  • Quality control methodologies: in-process inspection, first article inspection and root cause analysis.
  • Production planning and scheduling (finite scheduling experience preferred).
  • Inventory management and materials control for fabric, leather and trim components.
  • Microsoft Office (Excel for reporting and KPI tracking) and experience with manufacturing or ERP systems (e.g., NetSuite, SAP, Fishbowl, JobBOSS).

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • High school diploma or GED; vocational certificate or technical training in upholstery, textiles, or industrial sewing preferred.

Preferred Education:

  • Associate degree or technical diploma in Furniture Design, Textile Technology, Industrial Technology, or a related manufacturing field.
  • Certifications or coursework in production supervision, lean manufacturing, or quality systems (e.g., Lean, Six Sigma basics) are a plus.
