Primary Functions

- Install springs, webbing, padding, foam, and other internal components; apply adhesives, tack strips, and staples to secure materials and achieve required comfort and support specifications.
- Rebuild or repair furniture frames and structural elements, performing light carpentry such as gluing, doweling, re-screwing joints and reinforcing corner blocks to restore stability.
- Apply advanced upholstery techniques including tufting, channeling, piping, pleating, and nailhead trim to achieve specified design details and aesthetic standards.
- Match replacement materials for color, texture and wear characteristics; advise customers on fabric choices, durability, cleaning requirements, and suitability for intended use.
- Operate pneumatic staplers, upholstery hammers, glue guns, webbing stretchers, sewing equipment, and other upholstery-specific tools safely and maintain them in good working order.
- Assemble and install completed upholstery pieces onto furniture frames, ensuring tight, smooth fit and alignment of seams, welting, and fastening points.
- Prepare cost estimates and material takeoffs for reupholstery and repair jobs, track labor hours and materials usage, and communicate any scope changes to management or clients.
- Collaborate with designers, project managers and restoration specialists to execute custom commissions, prototype pieces, and high-end or historically accurate restorations.
- Perform quality control inspections at multiple stages of the build/rebuild process to verify dimensions, seam integrity, cushion support, and finish details meet company and industry standards.
- Package and label completed pieces for delivery or installation, coordinate with shipping or on-site installation teams, and confirm customer satisfaction after delivery.
- Keep accurate records of jobs, materials, and special techniques used (e.g., fabric sources, pattern adjustments, stitching sequences) for future reference and warranty support.
- Train and mentor apprentices and junior upholstery staff on cutting, sewing, tool safety, and finishing techniques while promoting continuous improvement and craftsmanship standards.
- Maintain a clean, safe and organized workstation, follow PPE and shop safety procedures, and ensure hazardous materials (solvents, adhesives) are stored and disposed of correctly.
- Troubleshoot fit, fabric behavior, and cushioning problems during the build cycle; propose and implement corrective solutions such as re-padding, re-patterning or structural reinforcement.
- Work to production schedules and deadlines, balancing quality with productivity; prioritize tasks across multiple projects and escalate delays or supply shortages to the supervisor.
- Perform preventive maintenance and basic repairs on sewing machines, compressors, and other equipment, and coordinate with maintenance staff for larger repairs or service.
- Adapt upholstery approaches for specialty projects such as marine, automotive, theatrical, or outdoor furniture using weatherproof materials, foam grades and fasteners suited for the environment.
- Provide on-site assessments and installations when required, troubleshooting fit issues in the field and completing touch-up adjustments to ensure final acceptance by the client.
