Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Deliver high-quality, evidence-based clinical care to adult and/or pediatric patients with urologic conditions in outpatient clinics, operating rooms, and hospital units, ensuring continuity and coordination of care across settings.
  • Evaluate new and established patients through detailed history-taking, focused physical examination, and interpretation of diagnostic studies (urinalysis, urine culture, PSA, renal ultrasound, CT urogram, MRI pelvis, uroflowmetry).
  • Formulate and document accurate diagnoses and individualized treatment plans that include medical management, minimally invasive procedures, and major reconstructive or oncologic surgery as indicated.
  • Perform a broad range of urologic procedures including cystoscopy, ureteroscopy with laser lithotripsy, percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL), transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP), prostate biopsy, radical prostatectomy, radical cystectomy, reconstructive urethroplasty, and robotic-assisted laparoscopic procedures.
  • Provide perioperative care: preoperative assessment and optimization, intraoperative decision-making and documentation, postoperative monitoring and complication management, and clear discharge instructions and follow-up planning.
  • Lead or participate in multidisciplinary tumor boards and collaborate with medical oncology, radiation oncology, nephrology, gynecology, colorectal surgery, and primary care to optimize patient outcomes for complex urologic oncology cases.
  • Manage acute urologic emergencies such as urinary retention, testicular torsion, obstructing ureteral stones with infection, and severe hematuria with prompt evaluation, stabilization, and appropriate surgical or interventional management.
  • Counsel patients and families on diagnosis, prognosis, treatment options (including risks, benefits, and alternatives), fertility preservation, sexual function, and long-term survivorship issues, employing shared decision-making principles.
  • Interpret urodynamic testing and provide treatment recommendations for lower urinary tract dysfunction including incontinence, neurogenic bladder, and pediatric voiding disorders.
  • Supervise and mentor residents, medical students, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, and clinical staff; provide constructive feedback and ensure adherence to clinical protocols and best practices.
  • Participate in quality improvement initiatives, morbidity and mortality reviews, and patient safety programs to reduce complications and improve care pathways and outcomes.
  • Maintain meticulous clinical documentation and complete required coding (CPT, ICD-10) and billing documentation in the EMR to support accurate reimbursement and compliance.
  • Maintain current Board certification/eligibility in Urology and fulfill continuing medical education (CME) requirements; stay current with emerging literature, clinical trials, and best practices in urology.
  • Obtain and maintain hospital privileges, medical staff appointments, and necessary licensure including state medical license and DEA registration; comply with credentialing and privileging processes.
  • Implement perioperative antibiotic stewardship, venous thromboembolism prophylaxis, and infection prevention protocols specific to urologic procedures and inpatient units.
  • Coordinate outpatient clinic logistics: triage referrals, order and interpret imaging and laboratory results, and manage clinic-based procedures such as prostate biopsies, bladder instillations, and outpatient cystoscopy.
  • Utilize and optimize electronic health record tools for order sets, procedure notes, and referral communications to streamline workflows and improve patient access to care.
  • Participate in clinical research, registries, and clinical trials when applicable; recruit patients, obtain informed consent, and adhere to IRB protocols and documentation.
  • Provide telemedicine consultations and follow-ups to expand access, improve convenience, and maintain continuity of care, including pre- and post-operative virtual visits according to institutional policy.
  • Serve as an institutional resource on urologic guidelines, contribute to practice guideline development, and implement evidence-based protocols for conditions such as prostate cancer, bladder cancer, and stone disease.
  • Engage in community outreach and patient education initiatives to promote urologic health, cancer screening, and early detection programs.

  • Participate in billing review and denial management processes by providing clinical rationale and documentation clarifications as needed.
  • Contribute to patient satisfaction and experience initiatives, respond to patient feedback, and participate in measures to improve access, communication, and clinic throughput.

  • Mentor and support clinical research nurses and data coordinators to ensure accurate capture of study endpoints and regulatory compliance.
  • Advise on capital equipment purchases (e.g., scope inventory, lithotripsy devices, robotic systems) and participate in vendor evaluations and operating room equipment trials.
  • Provide on-call coverage as scheduled for urologic emergencies and urgent consults, ensuring timely response and high quality acute care.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Board certification or board eligibility in Urology (ABU or equivalent) with demonstrated procedural competency.
  • Proficiency in diagnostic cystoscopy, ureteroscopy, ureteral stent placement, and endourologic laser lithotripsy.
  • Experience with robotic-assisted laparoscopic surgery (da Vinci or equivalent) for prostatectomy, nephrectomy, and other complex reconstructions.

  • Knowledge of perioperative management, anesthesia interactions, and post-operative complication recognition/treatment.
  • Understanding of regulatory compliance, CPT/ICD-10 coding for urologic procedures, and basic billing principles.
  • Experience participating in clinical research, clinical trial enrollment, and adherence to IRB protocols.
  • Credentialing and privileging process knowledge and ability to maintain hospital privileges and DEA licensure.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) degree from an accredited medical school.

  • Board eligible or board certified by the American Board of Urology (or equivalent national board).
  • Active or eligible state medical license and DEA registration.

Preferred Education:
