Urology Residents are physician-trainees enrolled in an accredited urology residency program who provide comprehensive surgical and medical care to patients with genitourinary disorders. They perform diagnostic and therapeutic procedures (cystoscopy, transurethral resection, percutaneous nephrolithotomy, ureteroscopy, robotic and laparoscopic cases), manage inpatient wards and consults, participate in operating room care and perioperative management, lead multidisciplinary rounds, engage in teaching and quality improvement, and complete progressive competency milestones under faculty supervision. Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Provide comprehensive inpatient and outpatient care for adult and pediatric patients with urologic conditions, including assessment, differential diagnosis, formulation of evidence-based treatment plans, and longitudinal follow-up.
  • Perform and document focused history and physical examinations specific to genitourinary complaints, interpreting labs, imaging (ultrasound, CT, MRI), and urodynamic testing to guide management.
  • Assist in and perform diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopic procedures (flexible and rigid cystoscopy, ureteroscopy) under supervision and progressively with increasing autonomy as skills develop.
  • Participate in and progressively lead operative cases including open, laparoscopic, and robotic-assisted urologic procedures (radical prostatectomy, nephrectomy, pyeloplasty) following ACGME case and competency requirements.
  • Recognize and manage urologic emergencies such as obstructive uropathy, sepsis from urologic sources, testicular torsion, and traumatic genitourinary injuries, including urgent decision-making and procedural interventions.
  • Manage nephrolithiasis with expertise in medical and procedural options, including shock wave lithotripsy coordination, percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL) assistance, and postoperative stone follow-up.
  • Provide perioperative care: preoperative risk assessment, informed consent, intraoperative assistance, postoperative rounding, pain control plans, complication recognition, and discharge planning.
  • Supervise and instruct medical students, junior residents, and advanced practice providers during clinical rotations, rounds, and in the OR, delivering structured teaching and formative feedback.
  • Adhere to and document compliance with hospital protocols, surgical checklists, infection control standards, and ACGME milestones and competency-based evaluations.
  • Participate in on-call rotation and cross-cover duties, triaging consults from the emergency department and other services, and coordinating timely transfer or admission when necessary.

  • Maintain accurate, timely, and thorough electronic medical record documentation including operative notes, procedure notes, discharge summaries, and consult notes in accordance with institutional and billing requirements.
  • Engage in scholarly activity: design and conduct clinical research, contribute to manuscripts and abstracts, present at conferences, and pursue scientific inquiry that advances urologic care.
  • Counsel patients and families about diagnoses, surgical and non-surgical options, expected outcomes, complications, fertility/sexual health implications, and long-term surveillance plans with empathy and clarity.
  • Coordinate preoperative optimization with anesthesia, cardiology, and primary care for medically complex patients and participate in multidisciplinary pre-op clinics when indicated.
  • Demonstrate progressive leadership in team-based care: coordinate perioperative teams, delegate tasks appropriately, and ensure safe handoffs during shift changes and transfer of care.
  • Maintain competency in procedural sedation, sterile technique, hemostasis management, and blood product utilization according to institutional policies.
  • Participate in simulation training and skills labs to refine technical abilities (suturing, laparoscopy, robot console time) and maintain proficiency in emergent bedside procedures (suprapubic catheter placement, scrotal exploration).

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) from an accredited medical school (or equivalent international degree), successful completion of required licensing examinations (USMLE/COMLEX steps as appropriate), and enrollment/match into an accredited urology residency program.

Preferred Education:

  • Completion of a preliminary year in surgery or internship with demonstrable operative experience; additional research year or advanced degrees (MPH, MSc, PhD) for candidates targeting academic careers.
