Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Provide comprehensive outpatient and inpatient urologic care, including assessment, diagnosis, and management of benign and malignant urologic conditions with clear, patient-centered treatment plans that prioritize safety, outcomes, and shared decision-making.
  • Perform a full spectrum of operative urology procedures, including robotic-assisted laparoscopic procedures (e.g., radical prostatectomy, partial nephrectomy), open surgeries (e.g., cystectomy, complex reconstruction), and laparoscopic cases, ensuring adherence to perioperative protocols and surgical best practices.
  • Perform advanced endourologic procedures for stone disease and upper tract pathology such as ureteroscopy, flexible ureteroscopy with laser lithotripsy, and percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL) with attention to minimizing complications and maximizing stone-free rates.
  • Manage urologic oncology patients through diagnosis, staging, multidisciplinary tumor board discussion, surgical planning, intraoperative management, postoperative follow-up, and survivorship care for prostate, bladder, kidney, and testicular cancers.
  • Diagnose and treat voiding dysfunction, benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), urinary incontinence, pelvic organ prolapse, and perform appropriate interventions including medical therapy, minimally invasive procedures, and reconstructive surgeries.
  • Provide acute urological consultation and care for emergency presentations such as obstructing stones, hematuria, urinary retention, urosepsis, traumatic urologic injuries, and postoperative complications, including timely triage and escalation.
  • Lead perioperative care pathways: preoperative assessment, optimization of comorbidities, enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) protocols, intraoperative safety checklists, and postoperative pain control and discharge planning to reduce length of stay and readmissions.
  • Supervise and mentor residents, fellows, and medical students in clinic, OR, and on-call settings; design and deliver structured teaching sessions and participate actively in educational program development and evaluation.
  • Participate in multidisciplinary conferences (tumor boards, radiology review, nephrology, radiation oncology) to integrate imaging, pathology, and systemic care into individualized treatment plans for complex urologic patients.
  • Interpret and integrate diagnostic imaging (CT, MRI, ultrasound, nuclear medicine) and urodynamic testing into clinical decision-making, working closely with radiology and functional testing teams for accurate staging and functional assessment.
  • Maintain meticulous, timely, and compliant documentation in the electronic medical record (EMR), including operative reports, progress notes, procedure consents, and coding documentation to support clinical continuity and billing accuracy.
  • Lead and participate in quality improvement and patient safety initiatives such as morbidity and mortality review, infection control, surgical outcomes tracking, readmission reduction, and clinical practice guideline implementation.
  • Engage in clinical research activities: design and conduct clinical trials, retrospective and prospective studies, quality projects; submit IRB protocols, present findings, and publish in peer-reviewed journals to advance urologic care.
  • Provide on-call coverage per departmental schedule, respond to urgent inpatient consults and emergency procedures, demonstrating reliable availability and appropriate escalation to senior clinicians when needed.
  • Coordinate preoperative and postoperative care with anesthesiology, perioperative nursing, pain management, and allied health professionals to ensure continuity of care and optimal patient outcomes.
  • Counsel patients and families on complex care decisions, surgical risks and benefits, postoperative expectations, fertility/sexual function preservation, and long-term surveillance strategies, using culturally sensitive and health-literate communication.
  • Implement minimally invasive and technology-driven approaches including image-guided surgery, robotic platforms (da Vinci or equivalent), electrosurgical/laser devices, and endoscopic equipment while adhering to device safety and maintenance processes.
  • Manage clinic operations when assigned: patient scheduling, triage, nurse practitioner/physician assistant collaboration, utilization review, and performance metrics with a focus on access, throughput, and patient satisfaction.
  • Oversee credentialing and privileging processes for urologic procedures, maintain hospital and ambulatory surgery center privileges, and ensure compliance with institutional policies and state medical board regulations.
  • Participate in departmental and institutional committees focused on strategic growth of urology services, program development, community outreach, and marketing to support referral growth and service-line revenue.
  • Provide leadership in complex reconstructive cases including urinary diversion, urethral reconstruction, fistula repair, and pelvic reconstructive techniques, ensuring long-term functional outcomes and complication prevention.
  • Coordinate palliative and survivorship care for advanced urologic malignancies, working with palliative care, medical oncology, and social work to manage symptoms, quality-of-life concerns, and end-of-life planning.
  • Ensure continuous professional development by maintaining board certification/eligibility, attending national meetings (AUA), participating in hands-on surgical skills training, and integrating evidence-based guidelines into practice.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • Fellowship training in Urologic Oncology, Endourology/Stone, Minimally Invasive/Robotic Surgery, Female Pelvic Medicine & Reconstructive Surgery, or Pediatric Urology.
  • Advanced degrees (MPH, MSc, or MBA) are a plus for roles with academic or administrative responsibilities.
