Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Plan, design, and execute moderated and unmoderated usability tests across web, mobile, and embedded interfaces, defining research goals, success metrics, sampling plans, screening criteria, and test scripts to validate product hypotheses and inform prioritized design changes.
  • Lead heuristic evaluations and expert reviews using established usability principles (Nielsen, Gerhardt-Powals) and accessibility standards (WCAG 2.1/3.0) to identify usability problems, severity ratings, and remediation strategies that reduce friction and improve compliance.
  • Recruit, screen, and manage panels of target users and personas for iterative testing and longitudinal studies, coordinating schedules, incentives, and participant confidentiality while optimizing recruitment pipelines and vendor relationships.
  • Conduct in-depth qualitative research: contextual interviews, ethnographic field studies, diary studies, and focus groups to uncover unmet user needs, workflows, pain points, and emotional drivers that inform product vision and roadmap priorities.
  • Design and run quantitative usability experiments and A/B tests in partnership with product analytics teams to measure behavioral changes, lift in key performance indicators (KPIs), and statistically validate design hypotheses.
  • Create rapid prototypes (low- and high-fidelity) and interactive wireframes in Figma, Axure, Sketch, or similar tools to test concepts early and iterate based on real user feedback, reducing development risk and time-to-market.
  • Synthesize mixed-methods findings into clear, actionable reports, UX metrics dashboards, journey maps, personas, and design recommendations that translate user needs into engineering requirements and business outcomes.
  • Define and track usability metrics (task success rate, time on task, error rate, Net Promoter Score, SUS, task completion funnel) and maintain benchmarking studies to measure experience improvements across releases.
  • Partner with engineering and product teams to prioritize usability issues, define acceptance criteria, and validate fixes through regression testing and post-release usability checks.
  • Facilitate collaborative workshops (design sprints, co-creation sessions, affinity mapping) to align cross-functional teams on user-centered priorities and to accelerate consensus-driven solutions.
  • Own the usability test lifecycle: test plan, moderation guide, data capture (video, transcripts, clickstreams), anonymization, analysis, and archiving of raw and synthesized findings for reproducibility and knowledge transfer.
  • Drive accessibility testing and remediation planning by running manual audits, assistive-technology (screen reader) walkthroughs, and automated checks to ensure products meet legal and ethical standards and broaden market reach.
  • Translate user insights into prioritized, measurable recommendations that feed product backlogs (user stories, acceptance criteria, UX tasks) and influence release planning and product roadmaps.
  • Collaborate with analytics and data engineering to instrument user journeys, define events and cohorts, and analyze funnel drop-off, retention and engagement patterns to complement qualitative findings with quantitative evidence.
  • Mentor junior UX researchers and usability testers, establishing best practices for moderation, synthesis, reporting, and research ethics, and contributing to a culture of continuous learning and user-centric decision making.
  • Build and maintain a centralized repository of research assets — videos, personas, findings, and design guidelines — to increase reuse, reduce duplicate research, and accelerate onboarding.
  • Engage directly with customer success and support teams to triage product complaints, synthesize recurring usability pain points, and design rapid test plans to validate remediation ideas.
  • Run remote usability testing platforms (UserTesting, Lookback, Optimal Workshop, Maze) and lab-based setups, managing technical setup, recording quality, and data integrity for reliable insight generation.
  • Perform information architecture and content audits, advising product teams on navigation, labeling, taxonomy, microcopy and content hierarchy improvements to reduce cognitive load and increase task efficiency.
  • Lead cross-product heuristic benchmarking and competitive usability analysis to identify gaps, opportunities for differentiation, and strategic UX investments that increase market share and customer loyalty.
  • Prepare and present persuasive, data-driven narratives to senior leadership that tie usability findings to business metrics (conversion uplift, reduced support costs, increased retention) and secure investment in UX initiatives.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • Bachelor's degree in Human-Computer Interaction (HCI), Psychology, Cognitive Science, Design, Human Factors, Information Science, Computer Science, or a related field.

Preferred Education:

  • Master's degree in Human-Computer Interaction, Human Factors, Cognitive Psychology, Interaction Design, or related discipline preferred for senior/lead roles.
