- Develop and own the cross-product user research strategy and roadmap that aligns with business objectives, design initiatives, and engineering milestones, ensuring research outputs are timely, actionable, and prioritized.
- Design mixed-methods research studies (heuristic evaluations, task-based usability tests, diary studies, ethnography, contextual inquiry, surveys, analytics-driven experiments) to surface root causes of user pain and quantify usability gaps.
- Serve as the primary research partner to product managers, design leads, engineering managers, and business stakeholders, translating user insights into clear design recommendations, acceptance criteria, and success metrics.
- Conduct advanced usability testing on prototypes and production experiences across platforms (web, mobile, native apps, voice, and hardware), measuring task success, time-on-task, error rate, satisfaction (SUS/NPS), and other UX metrics.
- Create repeatable research artifacts and deliverables (research plans, test scripts, annotated recordings, transcripts, affinity maps, insight reports, executive briefs) that communicate both tactical fixes and strategic implications.
- Synthesize qualitative and quantitative data (behavioral analytics, A/B test results, surveys, interview transcripts) into concise, prioritized insights and product proposals tied to KPIs and business outcomes.
- Establish and maintain recruitment pipelines, panels, and vendor relationships to ensure timely access to representative participants, including hard-to-reach or enterprise user groups.
- Implement and scale research operations best practices: research repositories, consent and ethics processes, participant incentives, tooling standards, and data privacy compliance (GDPR, CCPA).
- Mentor, hire, and develop junior and mid-level researchers through coaching, performance feedback, and career development plans to grow research capability across the organization.
- Lead heuristic audits and accessibility reviews (WCAG) to identify compliance issues and usability barriers for diverse users, working with design and engineering to remediate issues.
- Partner with data analytics and experimentation teams to design and interpret quantitative experiments (A/B tests), ensuring research insights are validated with product metrics and statistical rigor.
- Facilitate cross-functional workshops (co-creation, affinity mapping, journey mapping, usability walkthroughs) to align teams on user needs and to democratize research findings across product and design.
- Prioritize research initiatives and backlog items based on user impact, feasibility, and strategic value; advocate for research-informed trade-offs in planning and roadmap discussions.
- Build and maintain a living repository of user insights, personas, patterns, and evidence that is searchable and discoverable by product, design, marketing, and support teams.
- Drive continuous improvement in research quality and velocity by introducing toolchains (remote testing platforms, transcription, automated tagging), standard templates, and lightweight synthesis patterns.
- Represent research findings to senior leadership and external partners through compelling presentations and storytelling that connect user behavior to business metrics and product outcomes.
- Manage budgets and contracts for external research vendors, labs, and recruitment agencies, ensuring cost-effective and scalable research programs.
- Lead research efforts for new feature discovery and prioritization, including early directional studies, prototype validation, and post-launch usability assessments to measure adoption and long-term satisfaction.
- Ensure ethical research practice by establishing consent protocols, participant confidentiality standards, and the safe handling of sensitive user data.
- Translate customer support and customer-success qualitative signals into structured research inquiries and rapid discovery cycles to close feedback loops with product teams.
- Track and report on research impact by defining success criteria, monitoring adoption of recommendations, and correlating research interventions with product KPIs (engagement, retention, conversion, task completion).
Secondary Functions
- Advocate for user-centered design and research literacy across the company through training sessions, lunch-and-learns, and onboarding materials for non-research teams.
- Support ad-hoc stakeholder requests for fast-turnaround usability checks, smoke tests, and expert reviews to unblock product decisions.
- Contribute to the organization’s research toolkit selection and vendor evaluations for usability labs, remote testing, and analytics integrations.
- Maintain a prioritized backlog of research and usability improvements and collaborate with program managers to track implementation and outcomes.
- Help design and operationalize internal UX metrics and dashboards that measure usability health and product experience over time.
- Assist customer-facing teams by creating research-informed messaging, onboarding flows, and support documentation that reduce friction and escalation.
