Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Lead the planning, design, execution, and synthesis of complex usability and user experience studies (moderated usability testing, unmoderated usability testing, remote and in-person ethnography, diary studies, contextual inquiry, heuristic evaluations, and task-based studies) to inform product roadmaps and prioritize user problems.
  • Supervise, mentor, and develop a team of UX researchers and research associates, including hiring, performance management, career development plans, and creating professional growth pathways for the research organization.
  • Define and operationalize a scalable UX research strategy and roadmap that aligns with product objectives, business KPIs, and cross-functional priorities, ensuring research efforts deliver measurable impact.
  • Design and oversee mixed-methods research programs that combine qualitative insights with quantitative analysis, A/B testing guidance, product analytics, and survey methodologies to validate hypotheses and measure outcomes.
  • Collaborate closely with product managers, UX/UI designers, engineering leads, and data analysts to embed research into product discovery, design sprints, and iterative product development cycles.
  • Build, refine, and govern research operations (participant recruitment, vendor management, tooling, documentation, consent processes, and data security) to increase throughput and maintain research quality and compliance.
  • Act as the primary research liaison to senior leadership and stakeholders—deliver compelling research narratives and presentations, translate findings into prioritized product recommendations, and advocate for user needs at strategic planning sessions.
  • Establish and track UX research success metrics (e.g., task success rate, time-on-task, SUS, NPS, adoption metrics) and tie qualitative insights to quantitative business outcomes to demonstrate ROI and influence prioritization.
  • Oversee usability lab programs, remote testing platforms, and recording/analysis workflows (Lookback, UserTesting, dscout, Morae, Hotjar), ensuring consistent use of tools and best practices across projects.
  • Create and maintain research repositories, synthesis documents, design patterns, and personas that make insights discoverable and reusable across product teams.
  • Manage research budgets, vendor contracts, and external recruiting partnerships to support participant diversity and timely study execution while optimizing costs.
  • Lead cross-functional initiatives that integrate accessibility and inclusive design research into product discovery, ensuring products meet WCAG and accessibility best practices based on user testing with diverse populations.
  • Drive continuous improvement by introducing standardized research templates, playbooks, analysis frameworks, and synthesis techniques (affinity mapping, journey mapping, causation mapping) to increase team efficiency and output quality.
  • Coach product and design teams on research literacy—teach stakeholders how to interpret results, run lightweight validation studies, and apply findings to design decisions to create a research-informed culture.
  • Conduct governance and ethical reviews for research activities (consent, participant privacy, data retention, ethics of testing, and sensitive populations) to ensure compliance with legal and organizational policies.
  • Plan and execute longitudinal research and evidence collection strategies to monitor long-term user behaviors, retention drivers, and product-market fit signals.
  • Coordinate recruitment strategies for representative participant panels, manage screener design, and ensure adequate sampling to surface insights across personas, segments, and global markets.
  • Synthesize complex findings into clear, actionable artifacts—executive summaries, research briefs, visualizations, journey maps, and prioritized opportunity backlogs that feed directly into product roadmaps.
  • Facilitate cross-team workshops (co-creation, ideation, usability readouts) to translate insights into prototypes, experiments, and validated design improvements.
  • Serve as an escalation point for complex studies, resolving methodological issues, addressing bias, ensuring validity and reliability of results, and improving study protocols to maximize confidence in findings.
  • Influence product strategy by surfacing unmet user needs, behavioral patterns, and pain points, and working with stakeholders to convert insights into high-impact product initiatives.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of user research trends, tools, and methodologies; evaluate and pilot new research technologies and processes that increase speed to insight.
  • Represent the research team externally as needed (industry events, conferences, customer interviews, user advisory panels) to build the organization’s reputation for user-centered design.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Proficiency with UX research and testing tools (e.g., UserTesting, Lookback, dscout, Optimal Workshop, UsabilityHub, Morae, Hotjar) and familiarity with collaboration tools (Miro, Notion, Confluence).
  • Strong quantitative skills: ability to design surveys, analyze descriptive statistics, run basic inferential tests, and interpret A/B test results; familiarity with analytics platforms (Mixpanel, Amplitude, GA4) is a plus.
  • Qualitative analysis mastery: coding, thematic analysis, affinity mapping, persona synthesis, and creating compelling narratives from interview data.
  • Research operations and panel management: participant recruitment, screening, incentive strategy, and vendor evaluation.
  • Experience integrating research insights with product analytics, experimentation, and design systems to measure impact.
  • Knowledge of accessibility testing and standards (WCAG), and experience conducting usability studies with users with disabilities.
  • Competence in data privacy, research ethics, consent procedures, and secure handling of PII in research workflows.
  • Ability to build and maintain research repositories, dashboards, and artifacts that scale knowledge across teams.
  • Familiarity with prototyping and interaction design tools (Figma, Sketch, InVision) to collaborate on rapid iterations and prototype testing.
  • Basic scripting or statistical programming (SQL, Python, or R) for data pulls or advanced quantitative analysis is advantageous.
  • Experience with longitudinal study design and cohort tracking to surface behavioral trends over time.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Human-Computer Interaction (HCI), Psychology, Cognitive Science, Human Factors, Anthropology, Sociology, or a related field.

Preferred Education:

  • Master’s degree or higher in HCI, Human Factors, Psychology, Cognitive Science, Social Research Methods, or equivalent professional experience.
