Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Lead and supervise a team of UX researchers, setting clear goals, conducting regular 1:1s, guiding career development, and ensuring high-quality delivery across projects.
  • Define and champion the research strategy and roadmap for assigned product areas, aligning research priorities with business goals, OKRs, and product roadmaps.
  • Design, approve, and oversee mixed-methods research studies—including contextual interviews, usability testing, diary studies, ethnography, surveys, card sorting, tree testing, and A/B experiment support—to answer strategic product questions.
  • Serve as the primary research partner to product, design, engineering, and analytics stakeholders; translate business questions into researchable objectives and actionable recommendations.
  • Manage research operations end-to-end: participant recruitment and screening, research incentives and vendor management, research scheduling, data governance, and repository management.
  • Synthesize qualitative and quantitative findings into compelling narrative reports, visual artifacts, journey maps, personas, and prioritized recommendations that drive product decisions.
  • Present research findings, implications, and trade-offs to cross-functional teams and senior leadership, tailoring messaging to audience needs and business impact.
  • Establish and maintain research standards, templates, playbooks, and best practices to ensure consistency, rigor, and reproducibility across the research team.
  • Coach and mentor researchers on research design, analysis techniques, stakeholder management, storytelling, and career progression; run training and brown-bag sessions to raise research literacy organization-wide.
  • Develop and own metrics to measure research impact (e.g., time-to-insight, recommendation adoption, product metrics influenced by research) and report on team performance.
  • Collaborate with data science and analytics teams to integrate quantitative analytics with qualitative insights, design surveys, and run experiments that validate hypotheses.
  • Oversee recruitment pipelines and participant panels, including compliance with privacy, IRB-like processes when applicable, and data protection policies for handling sensitive participant information.
  • Drive continuous improvement by running retrospectives on research projects, identifying process bottlenecks, and implementing operational improvements and tooling (e.g., Dovetail, UserTesting, Lookback, Optimal Workshop).
  • Manage research budgets, contracts, and vendor relationships for user recruitment, external labs, transcription, and specialized research services.
  • Ensure ethical research practices, informed consent, and accessibility considerations across studies; advocate for inclusive research that represents diverse user populations.
  • Support product discovery and design sprints with rapid formative research and iterative usability studies to reduce risk and accelerate validation cycles.
  • Facilitate cross-functional workshops (co-creation, affinity mapping, synthesis sessions) to translate insights into prioritized product opportunities and design decisions.
  • Recruit, interview, and hire top research talent; build a high-performing team culture focused on curiosity, collaboration, and measurable impact.
  • Act as a subject-matter expert on user behavior and mental models for your product domains, surfacing long-term trends and emergent user needs to inform product strategy.
  • Coordinate multi-market or cross-platform research programs, ensuring consistency while adapting methods to local contexts (e.g., mobile, web, accessibility, internationalization).
  • Create and maintain a centralized research repository and taxonomy so insights are discoverable, reusable, and connected to product decisions and design artifacts.
  • Balance strategic initiatives and tactical needs by prioritizing research requests, scoping studies for speed and rigor, and delegating appropriately to team members.
  • Mentor cross-functional partners in interpreting and applying research findings; help product and design teams adopt user-centered practices and measure outcomes.

Secondary Functions

  • Support ad-hoc research requests and rapid-response studies to address urgent product questions or live experiments.
  • Partner with analytics and data engineering to instrument product analytics and define UX-specific metrics that complement qualitative findings.

  • Basic competency with prototyping and design tools (Figma, Sketch) to facilitate collaborative testing and rapid iterating.
  • Experience with research ops: tooling, repositories, taxonomies, governance, and building scalable research processes.

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

Preferred Education:

  • Master's degree or PhD in HCI, Cognitive Psychology, Human Factors, Applied Anthropology, or other research-focused disciplines is highly desirable.
