The User Experience Technician (UX Technician) is a hands-on practitioner who supports UX research, usability testing, and prototype validation across product teams. This role combines technical setup and maintenance of usability labs, facilitation and moderation of user sessions (in-person and remote), media capture and processing, and detailed analysis and reporting to inform design and product decisions. Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Plan, design, and execute usability tests and user research sessions (moderated and unmoderated) for web, mobile, kiosk, and desktop products, ensuring tests align with research objectives and product KPIs.
  • Recruit, screen, schedule, and coordinate study participants, maintaining participant databases, consent records, and compensation workflows while ensuring diversity and representativeness.
  • Develop detailed test scripts, scenarios, task flows, and consent forms that reflect realistic user journeys and measure targeted user behaviors and outcomes.
  • Set up, configure, and maintain usability lab hardware and software (recording cameras, microphones, eye trackers, mobile rigs, networked devices, observation rooms, and remote research platforms).
  • Operate and troubleshoot remote and in-person research platforms such as UserTesting, Lookback, Morae, Optimal Workshop, and screen/audio capture solutions to ensure flawless session recordings.
  • Moderate usability sessions and focus groups when required, applying neutral probing, timely follow-up questions, and structured debrief techniques to elicit candid user feedback.
  • Capture high-fidelity audio, video, screen recordings, and interaction logs; segment, transcribe, and annotate media for rapid analysis and stakeholder consumption.
  • Perform qualitative analysis including affinity mapping, thematic coding, and journey mapping; synthesize findings into clear, prioritized recommendations for designers and product teams.
  • Produce polished deliverables: research reports, executive summaries, annotated video highlights, highlight reels, task success metrics, and usability scorecards that drive product decisions.
  • Conduct heuristic evaluations and accessibility reviews (WCAG 2.1+), identify UX issues, and recommend remediation steps that balance usability and technical constraints.
  • Assist designers and product teams with rapid prototyping and validation using tools like Figma, Sketch, Adobe XD, or Axure to iterate on interaction concepts and flows.
  • Support A/B and multivariate test planning and post-test analysis by collecting qualitative context and translating usability insights into hypotheses for experimentation.
  • Manage and maintain a shared repository of recorded sessions, transcriptions, research artifacts, and design patterns to enable knowledge reuse and cross-team collaboration.
  • Implement data capture and instrumentation support for UX analytics (event tagging, session replay, Google Analytics, Mixpanel, Amplitude) and collaborate with analytics teams to correlate qualitative and quantitative data.
  • Enforce research best practices and ethical standards, including participant privacy, data anonymization, secure storage, and institutional review board (IRB) or legal requirements when applicable.
  • Train team members, stakeholders, and junior researchers on testing protocols, lab equipment use, participant moderation techniques, and accessibility testing methods.
  • Coordinate logistics for remote testing across time zones, ensuring consistent test conditions, device compatibility, and participant support during sessions.
  • Create and maintain test plans, consent forms, and standard operating procedures (SOPs) for consistent, repeatable research across distributed product teams.
  • Troubleshoot cross-platform compatibility and interaction issues during testing on native mobile (iOS/Android), responsive web, and embedded systems, documenting reproducible steps for engineers.
  • Curate and share short, compelling research artifacts (video clips, quotes, micro-reports) to influence product roadmaps and demonstrate user pain points to executives and cross-functional stakeholders.
  • Measure and report on usability metrics (task success, time on task, error rate, SUS, NPS) and contextualize them with qualitative insights to recommend prioritized design changes.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for external vendors and labs, coordinating specialized testing (eye-tracking, biometric studies, large-scale panels) and managing vendor relationships and budgets.

  • Maintain inventory, procure, and license UX research tools and hardware; track warranties and replacement schedules to minimize downtime.
  • Support ad-hoc field research and contextual inquiry visits, setting up mobile recording systems and taking ethnographic notes to capture real-world usage.
  • Create reusable templates for test plans, recruitment screener forms, transcripts, and reporting decks to accelerate research cycles and ensure consistency.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • Associate degree or equivalent experience in a relevant discipline (Design, Psychology, Human Factors, Computer Science, Communications).

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in Human-Computer Interaction (HCI), Cognitive Psychology, Industrial Design, Interaction Design, Computer Science, or related field.
