Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Plan, lay out, and execute trenching and excavation activities according to engineering drawings, depth and grade specifications, and utility location markings while maintaining safe slope and shoring practices to prevent collapses.
- Install, align, and connect water, sewer, storm, gas, and electrical conduit pipe (PVC, ductile iron, HDPE, steel) including proper bedding, bell-and-spigot assembly, couplings, fusion joints, and mechanical restraints to ensure leak-free and code-compliant systems.
- Operate heavy equipment such as excavators, backhoes, loaders, forklifts, skid steers, trenchers, and compactors to dig trenches, set pipe, move materials, and backfill to specified compaction levels using proper equipment techniques.
- Build, set, and adjust precast and cast-in-place manholes and vaults including benching, channel forming, connection of incoming/outgoing pipes, sealing, and adjusting frames and lids to finish grade.
- Perform precise grade checks and elevation control using laser level, transit, GPS, and grade rods; set grade stakes, invert elevations, and ensure as-built compliance with blueprints and specifications.
- Install, test, and restore service valves, hydrants, fittings, and service connections; operate gate valves and exercise valves per owner specifications, and coordinate service interruptions with customers and utility owners.
- Perform confined-space entry tasks (manholes, vaults, pits) following OSHA confined-space procedures: air monitoring, ventilation, harnessing, retrieval systems, and continuous communication with an attendant.
- Execute trench shoring, shielding, and bracing systems (timber, hydraulic shore, aluminum shoring) in compliance with OSHA and company safety standards to protect crews working below grade.
- Conduct dewatering, pumping, and subgrade preparation to maintain dry, stable working conditions including staging pumps, piping, and sediment controls to meet environmental and permit requirements.
- Backfill, compact, and test backfill materials using plate compactors, rammers, and rollers to achieve specified compaction densities and perform field density tests (e.g., proctor/field density) as required by project specifications.
- Perform utility locating, potholing, and daylighting to verify existing utilities prior to excavation, using ground-penetrating radar (GPR), EM locators, and vacuum excavation techniques to reduce risk of utility strikes.
- Read, interpret, and follow construction plans, specifications, traffic control plans, and permit conditions; notify supervisors of discrepancies and propose corrective action to maintain schedule and budget.
- Install temporary and permanent traffic control and pedestrian protection devices (signs, cones, barricades, flagging) and coordinate work zone safety plans in accordance with MUTCD and company policies.
- Coordinate with inspectors, utility companies, pipeline operators, and municipal contacts to schedule inspections, obtain sign-offs, and ensure compliance with local, state, and federal regulations and permits.
- Assemble and install conduit, handholes, casings, and cable racks for electrical and communication infrastructure; pull conduit, string and secure cable, and perform basic connector and termination tasks when required.
- Execute pressure tests, leakage tests, and disinfection (for potable water) or line swabbing and pressure testing (for gas) to validate integrity of installed pipelines and document test results per project and regulatory requirements.
- Maintain accurate daily logs, field reports, material tickets, time sheets, and as-built markups using mobile devices or paper forms; communicate status updates to supervisors and document non-conformances and corrective actions.
- Monitor and enforce site housekeeping, erosion and sediment control measures, and environmental protection requirements including spill prevention, silt fencing, and proper disposal of spoils and materials.
- Troubleshoot and repair common field failures such as misaligned pipes, poor compaction, blockages, and damaged fittings; propose and implement durable field fixes that preserve long-term asset performance.
- Train and mentor junior crew members and apprentices on safe digging practices, pipe joining, equipment operation, and quality workmanship while maintaining a positive, high-performing crew culture.
- Respond to emergency call-outs for utility breaks and service interruptions, performing timely repair and temporary restoration work to restore service and minimize customer impact.
- Load, unload, inspect, and maintain tools, equipment, and small power tools; perform routine preventive maintenance and report equipment issues promptly to minimize downtime.
- Follow lockout/tagout procedures and other energy-isolation protocols when working on or near energized systems to protect personnel and assets.
- Collaborate with estimators and project planners to provide field-based input on material quantities, equipment needs, and realistic labor-hour estimates for bidding and planning purposes.
