Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Write clear, concise, and human-first UI copy (microcopy) for sign-up flows, onboarding, navigation, buttons, labels, tooltips, error messages, empty states, and other in-product touchpoints to reduce friction and increase task completion.
  • Collaborate with product managers and UX designers to define content requirements and align copy to user goals, product metrics, and business outcomes.
  • Develop and maintain voice and tone guidelines and style guides to ensure consistent brand messaging and user experience across product, marketing, and support channels.
  • Conduct content audits, inventory, and gap analysis to prioritize reuse, localization readiness, and consolidation of UI copy across platforms.
  • Use user research, usability testing, and qualitative feedback to iterate copy and measure impact on conversion rates, task success, time-on-task, and error reduction.
  • Create scenario-driven microcopy for edge cases, accessibility needs, and error handling that clearly communicates next steps and reduces user frustration.
  • Partner with UX researchers to synthesize test insights into practical copy changes and experiment designs (A/B tests, multivariate tests) to validate hypotheses.
  • Write help content, in-app guidance, FAQs, and contextual support text that reduces support tickets and improves self-serve resolution.
  • Localize content strategy by writing with internationalization and translation in mind; coordinate with localization teams to ensure clarity across languages.
  • Drive cross-functional alignment by presenting copy rationale, research findings, and performance results to product stakeholders and engineering teams.
  • Maintain and contribute to component-driven content within design systems and pattern libraries, ensuring copy scales consistently across product components.
  • Prioritize content backlog items, estimate effort, and participate in Agile ceremonies (sprint planning, stand-ups, retrospectives) to deliver copy on schedule.
  • Write accessible copy that follows WCAG best practices and ARIA patterns so the product is usable by people with disabilities.
  • Craft persuasive onboarding flows, CTAs, and retention messaging that drive activation and conversion while staying true to the product’s voice.
  • Create microcopy for multi-platform experiences (iOS, Android, web, desktop) with platform-specific conventions in mind.
  • Monitor analytics and product metrics (funnels, drop-offs, engagement) to identify content-led improvement opportunities and measure copy performance.
  • Partner with legal, compliance, and privacy teams to ensure copy meets regulatory and policy requirements without compromising clarity or UX.
  • Mentor junior writers, review peer copy, and contribute to a culture of content excellence through editorial feedback and content playbooks.
  • Produce content hypotheses and design experiments; analyze test data and recommend copy changes backed by quantitative and qualitative evidence.
  • Support product launches by writing release notes, in-app announcements, and microsites that clearly explain new features and value propositions.
  • Create and maintain documentation for copy patterns, content components, naming conventions, and tone rules to support consistent onboarding of new writers and designers.
  • Translate complex technical or domain-specific concepts into simple, user-friendly language that aligns with user mental models.

Secondary Functions

  • Participate in cross-functional workshops (design sprints, discovery sessions) to influence product direction with a content-first perspective.
  • Support content governance by auditing live content, identifying outdated or inconsistent copy, and coordinating retirements or updates.
  • Help prioritize accessibility remediations by flagging confusing labels, inaccessible phrasing, and missing contextual help.
  • Build lightweight content experiments and dashboards with product analytics and growth teams to continuously iterate on copy performance.
  • Contribute to customer research activities (interviews, surveys) to capture language users use and inform content decisions.
  • Assist marketing and support teams with product messaging, release communications, and knowledge base content when needed.
