Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Design and execute comprehensive research plans using mixed-methods (qualitative and quantitative) across the product lifecycle, including formative discovery, generative research, evaluative usability testing, and longitudinal studies to inform roadmap decisions.
  • Plan, recruit, and manage participant pipelines for remote and in-person studies, including screener creation, vendor coordination, incentivization, and compliance with privacy and ethics guidelines.
  • Conduct one-on-one user interviews, contextual inquiries, ethnographic field studies, and diary studies to surface user needs, mental models, pain points, workflows, and opportunity spaces in both desktop and mobile contexts.
  • Create and run moderated and unmoderated usability tests (remote and in-lab) to evaluate prototypes, wireframes, and production experiences; generate usability metrics and benchmark performance over time.
  • Design and analyze surveys and telemetry-driven research, including instrumentation plans, sample sizing, survey construction, bias mitigation, and interpretation of quantitative data to quantify user behavior and satisfaction.
  • Collaborate with product managers, designers, engineers, and data scientists to define research questions, success metrics, A/B test hypotheses, and post-launch measurement plans that tie insights to business outcomes.
  • Synthesize qualitative insights into clear, actionable deliverables—personas, journey maps, mental models, storyboards, research reports, and prioritized recommendations—that drive product and design decisions.
  • Translate research findings into measurable UX improvements by proposing specific design changes, acceptance criteria, and success metrics; work with teams to scope experiments and validate impact.
  • Run generative research to inform ideation sessions and co-design workshops; facilitate cross-functional workshops and design sprints to align stakeholders around user-centered solutions.
  • Use analytics platforms (e.g., Google Analytics, Mixpanel, Amplitude) and data queries to triangulate behavioral data with qualitative feedback and inform recruitment and research prioritization.
  • Design and evaluate A/B tests and multivariate experiments in partnership with experimentation teams to validate hypotheses and measure user and business impact.
  • Build and maintain a centralized research repository and knowledge base (Dovetail, Confluence, Notion) to ensure insights are discoverable, reusable, and prioritized by product teams.
  • Advocate for accessibility and inclusive research practices by evaluating products against WCAG standards, recruiting diverse participant panels, and recommending design changes to improve accessibility and usability for all users.
  • Prepare and present research findings and executive summaries to stakeholders and leadership using narrative storytelling, evidence-backed recommendations, and clear visualizations to drive stakeholder buy-in.
  • Mentor junior researchers and designers on research methods, synthesis techniques, recruitment best practices, and ethical considerations to elevate research capacity across the organization.
  • Develop research roadmaps that align with product strategy and quarterly OKRs, including scoping studies, budget planning, and vendor selection when external moderation or panels are required.
  • Partner with UX designers to iterate on prototypes, run rapid guerrilla tests, and validate design decisions early in the development process to reduce rework and increase product-market fit.
  • Conduct competitive and market research focused on user experience patterns, discoverability, onboarding, pricing perception, and feature parity to inform strategic product decisions.
  • Monitor and report on UX health metrics—task success rate, time-on-task, SUS/NPS scores, error rates—and incorporate findings into prioritization conversations and backlog grooming.
  • Ensure research rigor by applying robust sampling strategies, documenting limitations and biases, and implementing reproducible analysis workflows that combine qualitative coding and quantitative validation.
  • Lead cross-functional stakeholder interviews and discovery sessions to align on user needs, business constraints, and technical feasibility, translating ambiguous product questions into testable research plans.
  • Manage timelines, budgets, and external vendors for multi-study research programs, ensuring deliverables meet quality standards and are delivered on schedule.

Secondary Functions

  • Maintain and curate a searchable research archive and insights library so product teams can rapidly find validated user needs, quotes, and design artifacts.
  • Identify and implement improved research tooling and processes (screeners, consent flows, analysis templates) to increase throughput and consistency of research deliverables.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Expertise in mixed-methods research: in-depth qualitative (interviews, contextual inquiry, ethnography) and quantitative techniques (surveys, analytics triangulation, AB testing).
  • Proficiency running moderated and unmoderated usability tests using tools such as UserTesting, Lookback, Optimal Workshop, UserZoom, or similar platforms.
  • Experience with survey design and analysis tools (e.g., Qualtrics, SurveyMonkey, Typeform) and statistical analysis (basic inferential stats, confidence intervals).
  • Familiarity with analytics and product telemetry platforms (Google Analytics, Mixpanel, Amplitude) and ability to collaborate with analysts on event-based queries.
  • Comfortable querying data with SQL and collaborating with data science teams; familiarity with Python/R for statistical analysis is a plus.
  • Skilled in research synthesis tools and repositories such as Dovetail, Notion, Confluence, Airtable or similar knowledge management systems.
  • Practical knowledge of prototyping and design tools (Figma, Sketch, Adobe XD, InVision) to collaborate closely with design teams and iterate on concepts.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • Bachelor's degree in Human-Computer Interaction (HCI), Cognitive Psychology, Anthropology, Sociology, Industrial Design, Human Factors, or a related field.

Preferred Education:

  • Master's degree or higher in HCI, Human Factors, Cognitive Science, Anthropology, Psychology, or related design research field.
