Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Own and craft clear, user-focused microcopy across web, mobile, and in-app experiences, including buttons, labels, form fields, error messages, empty states, confirmations, tooltips, and progressive disclosure to reduce friction and increase completion rates.
- Develop and maintain a consistent voice and tone framework for the product, documenting rules and examples so cross-functional teams can apply language consistently across features and channels.
- Partner with product managers and designers from discovery through delivery to align content decisions with user needs, business goals, and accessibility standards; embed early in the design process to influence flows and UX patterns.
- Conduct content audits and gap analyses to identify inconsistent copy and opportunities to simplify language, reduce cognitive load, and improve task success across the product.
- Synthesize user research, usability testing, analytics, and support ticket trends to inform content changes; design and evaluate A/B tests and experiments that measure the impact of copy on conversion, engagement, and error reduction.
- Create and maintain reusable content patterns and components within the design system (e.g., content tokens, standardized messages, error families), enabling scalable, maintainable writing practices across multiple teams and platforms.
- Write and iterate conversational copy and flows for chatbots, voice interfaces, notifications, and email sequences with careful attention to context, timing, and user intent.
- Define content requirements and acceptance criteria for implementation stories; review front-end builds to ensure copy is implemented accurately and contextually across responsive breakpoints and localization variants.
- Lead localization-ready writing practices: write with translation and internationalization in mind, collaborate with localization teams, and create style guidance for translated content to preserve meaning and UX.
- Produce clear in-product help, onboarding guides, FAQ items, and contextual learning that reduce support load and enable users to self-serve effectively.
- Establish metrics and success criteria for content initiatives (task completion, abandonment, time-to-task, NPS, CSAT) and report results to stakeholders to prioritize content work and demonstrate ROI.
- Facilitate cross-functional workshops and writing sprints to rapidly ideate content solutions for complex flows such as account setup, payments, errors, and compliance messaging.
- Create and maintain internal documentation and training materials that explain content rationale, localization constraints, and governance for product teams, ensuring institutional knowledge persistence.
- Advocate for inclusive and accessible language choices that comply with WCAG and other accessibility standards, and work with designers and engineers to ensure content is perceivable and operable for all users.
- Troubleshoot and craft crisis, legal, and security messaging in coordination with legal, trust, and safety teams, ensuring clarity and appropriate tone under constrained requirements.
- Mentor junior writers and copy contributors across teams, conduct content reviews and provide constructive feedback to raise overall writing quality in product workstreams.
- Collaborate with analytics and data teams to instrument content experiments, define event tracking for copy variations, and interpret quantitative signals alongside qualitative feedback.
- Prioritize a content backlog based on product impact, user pain points, technical constraints, and localization effort; advocate for content work in sprint planning and roadmap discussions.
- Design content that supports conversion funnels, retention flows, and monetization initiatives while maintaining a user-first perspective and reducing deceptive patterns.
- Partner with marketing and brand teams to align product copy with overarching brand voice while adapting for task-focused product contexts.
- Maintain situational awareness of competitor products, market language trends, and platform conventions to ensure our product language is helpful, modern, and feels native to the platform.
- Prepare and present content strategy proposals, design-system updates, and test outcomes to leadership to secure resourcing and cross-functional alignment.
Secondary Functions
- Assist with content tagging and metadata curation to improve discoverability within help centers and knowledge bases.
- Support stakeholder reviews and legal sign-off cycles for regulated content, ensuring required compliance language is included without sacrificing clarity.
- Help onboard new product hires to content standards, governance, and key writing patterns in the design system.
- Contribute to customer support initiatives by drafting templated responses for common issues and analyzing support trends to inform product copy updates.
- Participate in asynchronous design reviews and provide copy-focused critique and recommendations to improve clarity and reduce ambiguity.
- Collaborate with growth or CRM teams on in-app messages and transactional emails to maintain continuity between product and external communications.
- Maintain a prioritized library of evergreen microcopy options and experimental variants for quick iteration during rapid-release cycles.
- Conduct competitive language benchmarking and produce concise reports that advise product direction and messaging strategy.
- Provide writing and review support during product launches, including release notes, in-app banners, and localized messaging checks.
- Offer ad-hoc consultation on terminology, labeling, and UX copy for partner integrations, API documentation summaries, and developer-facing interfaces.
