As a Value Stream Coach, you are a master of flow and a catalyst for organizational change. You will act as a servant leader and trusted advisor, partnering with senior leadership, Product Management, and technology teams to map, analyze, and optimize our core value streams. Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Lead and facilitate complex Value Stream Identification and Mapping workshops with cross-functional leaders to visualize the end-to-end flow of work, from concept to cash.
  • Coach and mentor leaders, managers, and teams on Lean-Agile principles, practices, and mindsets to foster a culture of continuous improvement and customer-centricity.
  • Guide the organization in establishing, measuring, and interpreting key flow metrics (e.g., Lead Time, Cycle Time, Throughput, Flow Efficiency, Work In Progress) to drive data-informed decisions.
  • Act as a change agent, systematically identifying and addressing organizational impediments, policies, and structures that hinder the smooth flow of value.
  • Partner with Lean Portfolio Management (LPM) and finance to implement Lean budgeting and governance models that align funding with value streams and enable adaptive planning.
  • Guide the design and launch of Agile Release Trains (ARTs) or other team-of-teams structures organized around the flow of value, ensuring clear purpose and alignment.
  • Champion and support the adoption of DevOps culture, automation, and a Continuous Delivery Pipeline (CI/CD) to reduce handoffs, shorten lead times, and improve quality.
  • Develop and deliver targeted coaching, training, and workshops on advanced topics such as Kanban, Systems Thinking, and advanced Value Stream Management techniques.
  • Serve as a trusted advisor to C-level executives and senior leadership, providing expert guidance on business agility strategy and the tangible benefits of a Lean transformation.
  • Foster a robust coaching community by mentoring Scrum Masters and team-level Agile Coaches, helping to build the organization's internal coaching capabilities.
  • Analyze the complete delivery lifecycle to pinpoint sources of waste, delay, and rework, and then facilitate the implementation of practical, sustainable solutions.
  • Drive the establishment of pull-based systems with clear Work-in-Progress (WIP) limits across all levels of the organization to improve predictability and focus.
  • Facilitate large-scale Inspect & Adapt (I&A) events or similar program-level retrospectives to drive relentless improvement of the value stream's processes and outcomes.
  • Promote Built-In Quality practices, including Test-Driven Development (TDD), and automated testing, to reduce defects and eliminate the need for downstream quality inspection.
  • Collaborate closely with Product and Solution Management to refine epic decomposition, feature slicing, and backlog management practices to support incremental value delivery.
  • Apply Systems Thinking to help the entire organization understand how different parts of the system interact and to optimize the whole rather than individual components.
  • Mediate and resolve conflicts and communication breakdowns between departments (e.g., Business, IT, Operations, Marketing) to ensure seamless collaboration within the value stream.
  • Assess the maturity and health of value streams using formal models and informal observations, providing clear feedback and a roadmap for continuous growth.
  • Guide teams in applying customer-centric practices like Design Thinking to ensure the solutions being built are valuable, usable, and feasible.
  • Own and communicate the state of the value stream's performance and improvement journey to all stakeholders, creating transparency and celebrating progress.

Secondary Functions

  • Support ad-hoc data requests and exploratory data analysis to uncover hidden patterns in delivery flow.
  • Contribute to the organization's broader data and tooling strategy and roadmap, particularly for Agile and portfolio management tools.
  • Collaborate with business units to translate their strategic needs into clear, actionable requirements for technology and process improvements.
  • Participate in sprint planning and agile ceremonies within internal transformation or platform teams as a subject matter expert.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Value Stream Mapping (VSM): Deep, hands-on expertise in facilitating VSM workshops and translating findings into an actionable improvement backlog.
  • Lean/Agile Frameworks: Mastery of multiple frameworks, especially Kanban at scale and the Scaled Agile Framework (SAFe), with a strong preference for SAFe Program Consultant (SPC) certification.
  • Flow Metrics & Analytics: Proven ability to implement, analyze, and coach on flow metrics (Lead Time, Cycle Time, Throughput, etc.) using tools like Jira Align, Azure DevOps, or other value stream management platforms.
  • Lean Portfolio Management (LPM): Experience with the principles and practices of LPM, including lean budgeting, governance, and connecting portfolio strategy to execution.
  • DevOps & CI/CD: Strong understanding of DevOps principles, continuous integration, continuous delivery, and how they enable business agility.
  • Systems Thinking: The ability to analyze and understand the organization as a complex system of interconnected parts, optimizing for the whole.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • Bachelor's Degree or equivalent professional experience in a relevant field.

Preferred Education:

  • Master’s Degree (MBA, MS in Organizational Leadership, or related field).
  • Industry certifications such as SAFe Program Consultant (SPC), Kanban Coaching Professional (KCP), Certified Enterprise Coach (CEC).

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range: 10-15+ years

Preferred:

  • A minimum of 10 years of experience in technology, product development, or process improvement roles.
  • At least 5-7 years of dedicated experience as an Agile Coach, with at least 2-3 years focused on program, portfolio, or enterprise-level coaching.
  • Demonstrable experience leading at least one major Lean-Agile transformation initiative, with a focus on value stream optimization.
  • Proven success in coaching senior leaders and managers, helping them transition their behaviors and mindset to support agility.
