Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Execute the complete disassembly of various industrial valves, meticulously documenting and tagging each component for inspection and traceability.
  • Perform thorough cleaning and detailed visual and dimensional inspections of all valve components to identify wear, corrosion, erosion, or other defects.
  • Conduct advanced diagnostic procedures, including non-destructive testing (NDT) like dye penetrant or magnetic particle inspection, to assess component integrity.
  • Skillfully operate specialized machinery such as lathes, milling machines, and surface grinders to repair, remanufacture, or fabricate valve components to precise specifications.
  • Expertly perform lapping and grinding on critical sealing surfaces of valve seats, discs, and wedges to achieve required flatness and finish for a perfect seal.
  • Reassemble valves according to manufacturer guidelines, engineering drawings, and established best practices, ensuring correct alignment and torque values.
  • Conduct rigorous hydrostatic and pneumatic pressure testing on assembled valves to verify shell integrity and seat leakage, ensuring they meet or exceed API, ASME, and client standards.
  • Accurately set, test, and certify pressure relief valves (PRVs) to specific set pressures, documenting results on test reports and attaching new certification tags.
  • Read and interpret complex technical documents, including isometric drawings, blueprints, P&IDs (Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams), and repair manuals.
  • Travel to customer facilities, including offshore platforms, refineries, and power plants, to perform in-line valve maintenance, troubleshooting, and emergency repairs.
  • Calibrate and function-test valve actuators (pneumatic, hydraulic, electric) and associated instrumentation like positioners and limit switches.
  • Generate comprehensive and detailed service reports, inspection forms, and test certificates for all work performed, maintaining an accurate record for quality assurance and client review.
  • Troubleshoot complex valve and actuator operational failures in the field, systematically identifying the root cause and implementing effective, lasting corrective actions.
  • Ensure all activities are performed in strict adherence to company and client Health, Safety, and Environmental (HSE) policies, including Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) procedures.
  • Manage and maintain an organized inventory of spare parts, gaskets, packing, and other consumables required for efficient repair operations.
  • Provide technical guidance and support to clients on proper valve operation, preventative maintenance strategies, and troubleshooting techniques.
  • Safely rig and operate material handling equipment, such as overhead cranes and forklifts, for the movement of heavy valves and equipment.
  • Prepare and pack valves and components for shipment, ensuring they are properly protected and documented for transit.
  • Interface directly with project managers, engineers, and client representatives to provide status updates and technical recommendations.
  • Participate in and lead pre-job safety meetings (e.g., Job Safety Analysis or JSA) to identify and mitigate potential hazards associated with the work scope.

Secondary Functions

  • Mentor and provide on-the-job training for apprentices and junior technicians to foster skill development within the team.
  • Assist the Quality Assurance department with failure analysis and contribute to root cause analysis investigations.
  • Support workshop and tool management by ensuring equipment is properly maintained, calibrated, and stored.
  • Contribute to the continuous improvement of work procedures and safety protocols by providing practical feedback and suggestions.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Valve Disassembly & Reassembly: Proficient in the systematic breakdown and reconstruction of diverse valve types (gate, globe, ball, check, control, PRV).
  • Hydrostatic & Pneumatic Testing: Skilled in setting up and safely conducting high-pressure tests to API and ASME standards.
  • Machining & Lapping: Competency in operating lathes, mills, and lapping machines to restore critical component dimensions and sealing surfaces.
  • Blueprint & Schematic Interpretation: Ability to read and understand complex engineering drawings, P&IDs, and technical manuals.
  • Precision Measurement: Proficient use of micrometers, calipers, dial indicators, and other metrology tools for dimensional inspection.
  • Pressure Relief Valve (PRV) Setting: Deep knowledge of setting, testing, and certifying safety and relief valves on specialized test benches.
  • Actuator & Controls Troubleshooting: Experience with diagnosing and repairing pneumatic, hydraulic, and electric actuators and their control systems.
  • Field Service Operations: Competence in performing maintenance and repairs in challenging industrial environments, often under pressure.
  • Industry Standards Knowledge: Familiarity with relevant codes and standards such as API 598, API 6D, ASME B16.34, and Section VIII.
  • Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS): Experience using software like SAP PM, Maximo, or other systems for work order management and documentation.
  • Safety Procedures: Thorough understanding and application of HSE protocols, particularly Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) and permit-to-work systems.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent.

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range: 2-7 years of hands-on experience in the repair and maintenance of industrial valves.

Preferred: Direct experience within demanding sectors such as Oil & Gas (upstream, midstream, or downstream), Chemical Processing, Power Generation (fossil or nuclear), or Pipeline Operations. Field service experience is highly valued.
