Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Spearhead the end-to-end leadership of a complete vehicle program, assuming ultimate accountability for achieving all program targets, including engineering, quality, cost, timing, and vehicle attributes.
  • Provide strategic and technical direction to the entire vehicle engineering organization, encompassing Body, Chassis, Powertrain, Electrical Systems, Thermal, and Vehicle Integration.
  • Champion the product vision and serve as the primary interface between the Program Team and the executive leadership, ensuring alignment and providing clear, concise status updates on progress, risks, and mitigation plans.
  • Drive the establishment and cascade of all vehicle-level technical specifications (VTS) and performance attributes, ensuring they are competitive, customer-focused, and achievable within program constraints.
  • Lead the cross-functional Program Team, fostering a culture of collaboration, transparency, and accountability across Design, Engineering, Manufacturing, Supply Chain, Quality, and Finance.
  • Direct all phases of the vehicle development process (VDP), from concept and architecture selection through all engineering and virtual build phases, prototype builds, validation, and launch.
  • Own the master program timeline, identifying the critical path, managing dependencies, and proactively implementing strategies to pull ahead or mitigate potential delays.
  • Manage the overall program budget, including R&D, tooling, and capital expenditures, ensuring robust financial discipline and delivering the program at or below the approved cost targets.
  • Lead major technical and commercial gate reviews (e.g., Styling Freeze, Sourcing Approval, Tooling Kick-Off), preparing the necessary materials and securing executive approval to proceed.
  • Oversee the complete vehicle validation and testing plan (DVP&R), ensuring the vehicle meets all internal and external requirements for safety, durability, reliability, and performance.
  • Direct the resolution of complex, cross-functional technical challenges, making data-driven decisions to keep the program moving forward without compromising on core objectives.
  • Partner with the Supply Chain and Purchasing organizations to develop and execute a sourcing strategy that balances cost, quality, and technology, including the management of key strategic supplier relationships.
  • Ensure the vehicle design is fully compliant with all applicable global regulatory and homologation requirements, including safety (FMVSS, ECE) and emissions standards.
  • Foster a culture of relentless innovation and continuous improvement, encouraging the team to challenge the status quo and explore new technologies and processes.
  • Mentor and develop the engineering leadership within the program, building a high-performing, resilient team capable of tackling next-generation challenges.
  • Drive the DFMEA and DFM/DFA processes to identify and mitigate risks early in the design phase, ensuring a robust product and a smooth manufacturing launch.
  • Oversee the complete vehicle Bill of Materials (BOM) management, change control processes, and mass management to meet all program targets.
  • Act as the primary technical liaison with joint venture partners, key suppliers, and external engineering service providers to ensure seamless collaboration and project execution.
  • Lead the launch readiness activities, working hand-in-hand with the manufacturing plant to manage pre-production builds and support the ramp-up to full volume production.
  • Personally conduct vehicle evaluations and test drives at critical development stages to provide subjective feedback and ensure the vehicle delivers the intended brand DNA and customer experience.

Secondary Functions

  • Support ad-hoc data requests and exploratory analysis for executive-level strategic planning.
  • Contribute to the evolution of the organization's overarching vehicle development process and data strategy.
  • Collaborate with marketing and sales business units to translate future market needs and customer desires into tangible engineering requirements for future programs.
  • Participate in sprint planning, agile ceremonies, and PI planning events to guide resource allocation and priorities for the engineering teams.
  • Act as a company ambassador at industry conferences, symposiums, and university recruiting events.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Deep, authoritative knowledge of the end-to-end automotive vehicle development process (e.g., GPDS, V-Model), from concept ideation to post-launch quality management.
  • Proven expertise in managing program finances, including business case development, capital and engineering budgets, piece cost, and tooling investment.
  • Strong proficiency in systems engineering principles and managing the cascade of requirements from vehicle-level attributes down to component-level specifications.
  • Comprehensive understanding of vehicle architecture, including Body-in-White (BIW) design, chassis systems, powertrain integration (both ICE and EV), and high/low-voltage electrical systems.
  • Familiarity with core engineering quality tools such as DFMEA, PFMEA, 8D problem solving, and APQP, and their practical application in a fast-paced environment.
  • Working knowledge of regulatory and homologation requirements for major global markets (North America, Europe, China).
  • Experience with Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) systems (e.g., Teamcenter, 3DEXPERIENCE) and BOM management best practices.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in an engineering discipline.

Preferred Education:

  • Master of Science (M.S.) in Engineering or a Master of Business Administration (MBA).

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range: 15+ years of progressive experience in the automotive industry, with at least 7-10 years in a direct leadership role managing complex engineering projects or vehicle programs.

Preferred:

  • Has successfully led at least one, preferably two, full vehicle programs from the "clean sheet" concept phase through to a successful high-volume manufacturing launch.
  • Direct and substantial experience with Electric Vehicle (EV) programs, including a deep understanding of battery systems, electric drive units, and thermal management.
  • Experience working in both established OEM and agile, startup-like environments is highly advantageous.
  • Demonstrable track record of delivering programs that meet or exceed quality, cost, and timing targets.
